We are seeking an experienced Social Worker Grade 2 to join our Neonatal Unit on a full-Time temporary basis until April 2025.


Social Workers at Monash Children's Hospital sit within the Monash Children's Allied Health Team, providing specialised services to infant, paediatric and adolescent patients and their families.

Social work services are provided in inpatient settings including Paediatric ICU, Children's Cancer Centre, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; in ambulatory care services such as the Department of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes and via state-wide services such as the Paediatric Palliative Care Program and the Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service.


A Day in the Life


As the Grade 2 Social Worker at Monash Children's Hospital in the neonatal unit you will collaborate with colleagues across the Women's Program, and the paediatric acute, subacute and community sectors to foster clinical excellence and consistency of practice within the service.

You will provide social work services primarily to newborns and their families/carers, however maybe required to work in other areas of the hospital at times.

In this role you will work very closely within the expert, supportive multi-disciplinary Newborns team. It is a fast paced role with excellent learning opportunities to develop your clinical skills. There is scope to develop or use your quality improvement, teaching and/or research skills.


You will be required to participate in the after-hours on call roster at Monash Health and may be expected to work across sites within Monash Health as required.


What you will bring:

  • You will have a good knowledge of resources and understanding of the assessment and intervention frameworks used to guide practice including the Children's Youth and Families Act and appropriate referral networks.
  • You will be able to demonstrate skills in psychosocial assessments, problem solving, communication and discharge planning.
  • You will be skilled at supporting families adjusting to their child's illness and able to provide grief and bereavement support as required.
  • You will develop and maintain strong links with universities and your Monash Health social work colleagues and supervise students and other staff as required.
  • You will be a dynamic, innovative and flexible practitioner and will receive regular supervision from highly experienced social work supervisors with opportunities for ongoing professional development.

What you will need:

  • A relevant social work qualification
  • Eligible for AASW membership
  • Experience preferably in an acute health care setting and/or with children and families
