A little bit about us:


The Net Zero Unit supports the Department and portfolio Ministers to strengthen and coordinate our portfolio's contribution to the Australian Government's commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

This includes working with teams across the department, and the Australian Public Service, to coordinate efforts to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport, infrastructure and communications sectors
  • Build resilience to extreme weather events impacting upon the infrastructure and markets that our department stewards and
  • Support the transition to, and take advantage of the opportunities of, a net zero future.
Current focus areas of the Net Zero Unit include:

  • Supporting our portfolio Ministers and the department to engage with and contribute to whole of government efforts to transition to Net Zero
  • Supporting our Ministers and executive's participation in wholeofgovernment climate and energy fora and committees
  • Leading the delivery of the transport sector plan for decarbonisation, known as the Transport and Infrastructure Net Zero Roadmap
  • Managing the Infrastructure and Transport Ministers' Meeting (ITMM) working groups for transport and infrastructure decarbonisation
  • Delivering strategic coordination and support for nonportfolio climate and energy policy issues and briefs
  • Building our department's climate and emissions capability and engagement.

The Net Zero Unit is a forward-thinking team that has multiple vacancies at the APS 5 and 6 level, with a focus on strategic policy research, coordination and consultation.

Experience in climate and relevant industry policy, data analysis, strategic policy and coordination is desirable.

Who are we looking for?
We have fun working in a coordinating policy unit at the forefront of the Australian Government's agenda.

The role is varied and dynamic and will be tailored to your skills and interests.

However, typical duties will include:

  • Proving high quality secretariat, reporting and coordination services in support of public consultation, working groups, interdepartmental committees and other meetings that relate to the net zero agenda
  • Drafting speeches, presentations, briefs and correspondence to support portfolio Ministers, the Department's executive and the Strategic Adviser of the Net Zero Unit to effectively engage across the APS, State and Territory Governments, industry, and other stakeholders on matters of interest to our portfolio
  • Researching approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport and infrastructure sectors which supports the transition of the Australian economy to net zero
  • Drafting formal advice to Government on strategic policy and programs
