Redland Emergency Department is offering an ACEM accredited US Special Skills Placement commencing February 2025 for 6 months duration.

The trainee will work 0.5 FTE Ultrasound (3 months accredited non-ED time) and 0.5 FTE Emergency Department (3 months accredited non-tertiary time) and have a broad experience in acute and subacute point of care sonography.

Term opportunities

  • Protected and rostered ultrasound shifts (4 x 10 hours US shifts per fortnight)
  • One to one scanning with FACEM CCPU and sonographers
  • Commencement/completion of core CCPU units
  • AAA, eFAST, BELS, lung
  • Other CCPU units to commence/complete biliary, early Pregnancy, basic soft tissue, DVT, rapid cardiac echo, pleural effusion, renal/hydronephrosis and others


 Procedural guidance
  • USG vascular access, nerve blocks in the department as required
  • Facilitate/teach on our biannual US Workshop (i.
POCUS.ED) in February/November

  • Teach/facilitate at registrar US Workshops and hospital wide education
  • Involvement with research
  • Clinical audits/monthly ultrasound audit/case discussions
Eligibility

  • ACEM TS2-TS3 trainee/advanced trainee (postprimary exam)
  • Prior anaesthetics/ICU term
  • Attended CCPU accredited course (desirable)
  • Signed up or plan to sign up with ASUM to complete CCPU units
Redland Hospital is a public hospital at Brisbane's southern bayside area.

The emergency department manages approximately patient presentations per annum and is accredited for 36 months for training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM).

There is ample opportunity to work shifts in the dedicated paediatric area and work towards completion of the paediatric logbook.

Redland is located in south-east QLD with a culturally diverse population. The hospital is 30 minutes east of the Brisbane CBD and 1 hour to both Sunshine and Gold Coasts. There is close proximity to the Bay of Islands for camping, fishing and boating.

We are a diverse group of emergency physicians including new ACEM fellows and others working part-time in tertiary centres. Several of our group have special interests in pre-hospital/retrieval (LifeFlight), ultrasound (CCPU), medical education/simulation, rural/remote medicine (ACRRM) and geriatrics.

Other non-emergency rotations available for ACEM trainees:

  • Anaesthetics (6 months)
  • Medicine (6 months)
  • Paediatric ED (6 months at QLD Children's Hospital ED)
  • Intensive care medicine (6 months at Gold Coast University Hospital)
  • Tertiary ED (6 months at Gold Coast University Hospital)
  • ACEM accredited nontertiary time in a supportive environment with both young and experienced FACEMs
  • Greater confidence and independence with procedural and critical care skills (no intensive care on site)
  • Interhospital transfer and retrieval skills (>200 transfers per year)
  • Exceptional teaching that is interactive and engaging with SIM scenariobased training, USS workshops and regular education streamed online.
  • Success in ACEM Primary and Fellowship exams through weekly education (rostered 4 hours)
  • Perifellowship experience with potential FACEM positions available in the near future
