The Opportunity

PM&C is seeking an experienced macroeconomist and senior executive with exceptional leadership, stakeholder engagement and diverse policy skills to fill the position of Australia's G20 Sherpa.

The G20 Sherpa serves as the Prime Minister's personal representative to the G20.

The G20 Sherpa will also lead the new G20 and Trade Policy Division in PM&C's International and Security Group (ISG), working with the SES leadership of the Group to drive integration of international, economic and security policy issues.

As G20 Sherpa, you will be responsible for advising and briefing the Prime Minister for G20 meetings, and driving policy development and coordination on the full breadth of the G20 agenda across the Australian Government.

You will be required to travel and conduct high-level international negotiations to pursue Australia's national objectives in the G20.

You will be in frequent contact with international G20 Sherpa counterparts, foreign diplomats, senior leaders across the Australian Public Service (APS) and external stakeholders.

You will lead a new Division which will be the focus point for PM&C's work on international economic issues, including on multilateral economic institutions, bilateral and multilateral trade, work relating to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), international financial institutions, and the World Trade Organisation.

You will liaise with line departments and monitor emerging issues, and drive development and coordination across increasingly complex and wide-ranging international and economic policy issues, networking and negotiating outcomes on behalf of the Prime Minister, including in sensitive and conflictual circumstances on highly complex issues.

You will ensure that international economic work complements and reinforces the Government's international and domestic economic agendas.

As G20 Sherpa, you will be required to:

  • Lead complex and wide-ranging international economic engagement and negotiations in the G20 as the Prime Minister's representative;
  • Build and leverage relationships across PM&C, the Australian Public Service, and with international counterparts to drive Australia's influence in the G20;
  • Provide high level policy advice to the Prime Minister across international economic issues;
  • Exercise judgment and contribute to the delivery of the Government's priorities;
  • Establish and shape the culture of a new Division; and
  • Work with other senior executives in building a high performing and diverse organisation.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill the same or similar vacancies for 18 months from the date of advertising.

To be a strong contender for the role, you will have a deep understanding and demonstrated expertise on the international economic and foreign policy challenges facing Australia.

You will have experience in policy-making and the ability to navigate complex processes and issues to ensure the delivery of outcomes for the Australian people.

As the role involves high-level engagement with the Prime Minister, Senior Executives across Government and with international counterparts across the G20, you will have exceptional communication skills, including in complex and culturally sensitive environments.
