The Provisional Fellow in O&G Education involves a 0.5 FTE role with the University of Newcastle Medical School, coordinating and delivering education session to medical students in collaboration with the Senior Lecturer and Professor of O&G.

It is a senior role within the Maternity and Gynaecology Services based at John Hunter Hospital.

The Maternity and Gynaecology Service has 48 Obstetric beds (with an additional 15 flexible beds) and performs 4,300 deliveries per annum.

What you'll be doing


To provide effective obstetric and gynaecological services to the patients of the Hunter New England Local District, whilst undertaking learning and professional development activities with the aim of progressing to the Fellowship of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).

The Provisional Fellow in O&G Education involves a 0.5 FTE role with the University of Newcastle Medical School, coordinating and delivering education session to medical students in collaboration with the Senior Lecturer and Professor of O&G.

This aspect of the position prepares trainees for future roles in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education and provides insights into the theoretical bases of learning, curriculum development, and the role of technology in efficient and innovative education programs.

They will identify and complete a certificate of medical education (such as the Academy of Clinical Educators Certificate in Clinical Teaching and Supervision) within or external to the University of Newcastle.

The 0.5 FTE clinical role can be crafted to pursue the individual's interests and correspond with one of more Advanced Training Modules of their choosing, in consultation with their Training Supervisor and the respective Directors of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

This position will satisfy the RANZCOG Advanced Training Module criteria for Essential O&G. The Provisional Fellow takes a leadership role in ward rounds and management of complex inpatients. They participate fully in the after-hours rosters covering both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The role includes a contribution to daytime Birth Suite, caesarean list, and antenatal clinic coverage.

  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services
  • Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent communication, clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Demonstrated advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences
  • Commitment to participating in teaching, training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Education and Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
