Are you an ANZCA trainee looking for an out of the ordinary provisional fellowship experience? We have several exciting, mid-year opportunities for trainees looking for general or sub-speciality ANZCA provisional fellowships (regional, perioperative, simulation).


Where you'll be working

Anaesthesia training at the John Hunter Hospital campus will give you a rare opportunity to be involved in anaesthesia across the lifespan all at the same location.

We offer adult, paediatric, trauma, cardiothoracic, neuro (including interventional radiology), complex head & neck, major vascular and obstetric anaesthesia. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in our active and well-regarded regional and perioperative services.


Interested trainees can work up to 0.5FTE in the HNE Simulation Centre which is one of the busiest and longest running centres in Australia.

The centre provides training to practising clinicians from all disciplines which would suit trainees with an interest in education.

Trainees with an interest in improving systems to support clinicians will have a unique opportunity to work with the Human Factors team (Senior Fellow, research assistant, Director).


Newcastle is geographically blessed with stunning beaches, inland waterways, coastal walks, great sporting teams, a great sense of community spirit, and close proximity to both the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens.

What you'll be doing


This is an exciting mid-year opportunity to join the John Hunter Hospital Department of Anaesthesia and/or the HNE Simulation Centre.


Our general clinical fellowship positions provide an excellent opportunity for trainees seeking consolidation of their skills and autonomy in a supported environment.

Opportunities for part-time training are available by negotiation. There are several positions available for both 6 and 12 months. Trainees expecting to transition to PFY in late 2023 may be considered for appointment.

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Completion of minimum of 4 years clinical experience in an accredited training position in Anaesthesia recognised by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and successful completion of all elements of Advanced Training.
  • Desirable, completion of the Final Fellowship examination of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (we may consider Provisional Fellows who have completed all other aspects of Advanced Training who are planning to sit the exam in the Provisional Fellow year)
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills, both written and verbal, appropriate for an anaesthetist
  • Demonstrated ability to function harmoniously, efficiently and effectively as part of highperforming team.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently, and exercise initiative and judgment in prioritising time and resources
  • Demonstrated commitment to scholarship, including learning and teaching, and an understanding of the role of the clinical review process, audit and research in anaesthesia
  • An interest in a specific area of the specialty for further development.
