About Young District Hospital


Young District Hospital is a Level 3 26 bed facility that includes a 5 bed Level 3 Maternity service; 24 hour Emergency Department; an Operating theatre and Day Surgery Unit that operates up to 3 days per week; Pharmacy, Medical Imaging and Pathology Departments, and an Outpatient Oncology unit.

A full range of Community Health Services including Paediatric Speech Therapy, Dietetics, Diabetes Nurse Practitioner, Child and Family services, Women's Health services, Dental Health services, Counselling and Community Mental Health services.

An outreach service is also provided to the surrounding district.

The maternity service provides care for women with low to moderate risks under a medical/ midwifery shared care model.

There are approximately births per year, and the service accommodates mothers and babies transferred for postnatal care from the referral centres.

The service is staffed by Registered Midwives, and includes a 24 hour back up on call roster.


Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is the nearest Level 5 referral centre for women requiring complex care, and Canberra is the nearest Level 6 tertiary referral centre.

Both facilities are approximately 130km distance from Young.

Facilities include five designated maternity beds, a birthing unit, a level 2 neonatal care service and a maternity bath. Young has a student midwifery program, an antenatal shared care program and performs elective and emergency caesarean sections.

A Visiting Medical Officer is required to provide GP Procedural services in Obstetrics at Young District Hospital. The VMO will provide a high level of clinical care to patients and participate in the on call roster. The successful applicant will possess DRANZCOG Advanced and Fellowship of RACGP or ACRRM.


Murrumbidgee Local Health District requires Visiting Medical Officers to participate in service and policy development as well as an involvement with education, training and quality projects activities.

A National Police Check will be conducted, NSW Health does not require or accept the Fit2Work Badge offered as an option in eCredential.

COVID-19 Vaccination Compliancy
The Public Health (COVID-19 Vaccination of Health Care Workers) Order 2021 commenced on 26 August 2021.

The Order establishes mandatory requirements for health staff and persons working in health settings to be vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine.

Mandatory COVID-19 vaccination will now be required for all NSW Health staff.

  • Holds registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist General Practitioner.
  • Experience and formal recognition as a Procedural General Practitioner with advanced skills and DRANZCOG advanced or equivalent.
  • Minimum three (3) years post graduate clinical experience. Previous experience in Emergency Medicine, General Practice, Adult Internal Medicine, Paediatrics or Rural Medicine an advantage.
  • Knowledge of contemporary clinical management and modern approaches in assessment and management of the broad range of acute and chronic medical conditions. Competence in performing the range of minor urgent procedures commonly undertaken in a rural emergency department including Advanced Life Support and Trauma management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, and research and quality improvement.
  • Availability to participate in an oncall roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
  • Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD Values, goals and strategies.
