The key duties of the position include:

Employment Opportunity
The Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) Section in the Office of Corporate Counsel is primarily responsible for processing the departments access to information requests under the FOI and Privacy Acts. The section is also responsible for coordinating and reporting on public interest disclosures (PID) and coordinating the departments contribution to the Government's regulatory reform agenda.

We are looking for a committed, dynamic and innovative Privacy Officer to join our team. Successful candidates are likely to have opportunities to undertake work across the sections diverse responsibilities, and to build professional networks across the department.

As a Privacy Officer, you will exercise your strong statutory interpretation skills by working collaboratively with business areas to provide practical and solution-focused advice on a variety of complex, high-profile matters, including policy implementation and reforms, and program and legislative compliance. You will hone your decision-making abilities when assessing complex and significant privacy and FOI requests, including drafting submissions to senior decision makers within the department.

Privacy Officers engage proactively on privacy compliance, deliver privacy training to internal stakeholders, and work with the departments Privacy Champion to find new and innovative ways to promote privacy awareness. We also arrange privacy and PID training through the Australian Government Solicitor to enhance your specialist skills.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • assist the department to meet its compliance obligations under the Privacy Act, the Privacy Code, the Australian Privacy Principles, the PID Act, and the FOI Act
  • provide help and support to the departments Privacy Champion
  • provide advice to, and work with, business areas on drafting Privacy Impact Assessments and Privacy Threat Assessments
  • organise and deliver training to staff about privacy and relevant legislative frameworks
  • act as a Privacy Officer for the department, including liaising with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in relation to privacy issues
  • refine and develop best practice procedures and systems for the Privacy Unit
  • build and maintain relationships with various internal and external stakeholders
  • liaise and consult on privacy and information access matters
  • work flexibly in response to changes in business demands.

Other Qualifications: Legal qualifications are not essential but will be highly regarded.

To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General's Department applicants must be Australian citizens.

Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.

Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
