About the opportunity
This will include but not limited to the operational running of the mortuary and autopsy room.

Knowledge of the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council Subcommittee on Autopsy Practice - 'National Code of Ethical Autopsy Practice' and the requirements for respect and sensitivity to the deceased and their cultural and religious beliefs and for integrity and confidentiality with all matters pertaining to the decreased.

As a Mortuary Assistant you will perform the following:

  • Ensure optimum operational efficiency by performing mortuary duties include specimen handling, body transfer, storage and environmental maintenance;
  • Provide assistance to Anatomical Pathologists and Registrars with autopsies including preparation of body, evisceration and restoration of paediatric, adult and high risk autopsies;
  • Liaise with internal and external clients including the Funeral Directors and hospital social workers and assist with training of other mortuary staff, Registrars, Pathologist, Mater Mother's Bereavement team members; and
  • Manage all forms necessary for autopsy and body transfer, body register and all elements of Laboratory system tracking.

To be successful in this role, you are required to have:

  • High level communication and interpersonal skills, to work in a multi-disciplinary team and liaise with a broad range of clients in a respectful manner;
  • Knowledge of the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council Subcommittee on Autopsy Practice 'National Code of Ethical Autopsy Practice' and the requirements for respect and sensitivity to the deceased and their cultural and religious beliefs and for integrity and confidentiality with all matters pertaining to the decreased.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to gain knowledge of, techniques relating to postmortem examinations, tissue retrieval and other related Histology and Histology laboratory tasks; and
  • High attention to detail and documentation as well as time management skills.


In addition you will have well-developed oral and written communication skills and work as an active team member providing laboratory services dedicated to patients and our doctors.


About the organisation
Mater Pathology is the oldest pathology service in the Brisbane and surrounding areas.

Initially established and supervised by the Sisters of Mercy in 1919, Mater Pathology has grown into a multi-faceted and technologically advanced laboratory service serving patients, doctors and hospitals.

The service invests all profits back into patient care and is part of Mater Misericordiae Limited.

Mater Pathology is proud of its history but also is recognised for its experience in highly complex pathology.

The service is delivered by dedicated staff that understand healthcare such as our highly skilled specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, laboratory assistants, collection phlebotomists, couriers and other support personnel that ensure you get the correct result on time.

Our collection centres are located in over 34 suburbs supporting local communities.

In addition, Mater Pathology also offers a 24 hour collection service out of the South Brisbane Mater Adults Hospital for patient convenience.
