The Opportunity


The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering has an opportunity for a Research Associate position in computational modelling of the anatomical shoulder joint.

You will be working on a clinically relevant shoulder biomechanics project with the goal to develop CT-based patient-specific computational models of the shoulder anatomy including bony and soft tissue mechanics, and which can be adapted for implant design and selection, pre-surgical planning, and clinical decision making.

You will be joining a multi-disciplinary team comprising engineers, orthopaedic shoulder surgeons, nurses, diagnostic imaging specialists, medical students.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your research skills and output through your contribution to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals, participating in conferences and workshops and actively engaging with industry partners.

This role reports A/Professor Socrates Dokos, Dr Geoffrey Smith and Dr Uphar Chamoli and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level A $80,476 to $107,299 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixedterm contract 6 months with a possible extension

Skills & Experience

  • A Masters (or a PhD nearcompletion) with a background in musculoskeletal modelling, image processing and other numerical simulation tools such as MATLAB, ANSYS, COMSOL.
  • Experience in 3D computational modelling of musculoskeletal structures using Finite Element Analysis.
  • Ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clinicians, students, hospital staff, and external funding partners.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
