In the role of Principal Designer, you will be responsible for ensuring DRDMW maintains a polished, modern and efficient visual style.

Reporting to the Manager, Media and Communication, you will provide leadership for the team's creative services function by managing workflow, providing quality assurance and mentoring more junior design and AV officers within the team.

You will work with stakeholders within the Media and Communication team and across the business to understand the strategic drivers for design work and spread awareness of best-practice visual communication.


You will also be a highly skilled visual storyteller in your own right, able to use your design and visual communication skills to show the benefits of DRDMW's work across Queensland.

In the role, you will both oversee and contribute to the delivery of the full range of creative services work, including video, animation, illustration, photography, social media and layout and typesetting for both digital and print products.

You will have strong communication and negotiation skills, solid project management expertise, and the enthusiasm and ability to take a digital first approach.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

  • Deliver creative assets including illustration, layout, photography, videography, and animation from concept to finished product.
  • Ensure the efficient operation of the department's creative services function, including managing workflow and providing quality assurance checks.
  • Develop, implement, review and refine processes for how creative services work is delivered.
  • Understand the needs of DRDMW's business units, the Media and Communication unit and the creative services function, and negotiate with stakeholders to successfully balance those needs.
  • Ensure the proper implementation of the Queensland Government brand and DRDMW's visual identity across all creative services products.
  • Maintain an awareness of DRDMW's strategic and operational objectives and proactively provide advice to the department on how creative services can support the delivery of those objectives.
  • Provide advice to the Manager, Media and Communication in relation to current or emerging issues affecting, or likely to affect, the provision of creative services.
  • Maintain awareness of current and emerging trends in design and AV and advise on how they can be incorporated into the work of the Media and Communication unit.
  • Other duties as directed and required.
