Overview

  • The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) is an important partner of clinical staff in ensuring patients hospital journey is safe and culturally sensitive

The AHLO's responsibilities include:

  • Provision of cultural support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients admitted in the hospitals withinthe Murray Mallee, as well as their escorts.
  • Work alongside hospital clinicians in assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients navigate the healthsystems, as part of the support for their overall hospital journey, from admissions to discharge including liaisonwith their home community health centre to ensure continuity of care
  • Assist clinicians in communicating with clients regarding their health care and health procedure, and any otherhealth information, in a manner that is culturally sensitive and taking into consideration of any language barrier.
  • In consultation with relevant clinical staff, explain health care and clinical procedure to patients in a mannerthat is easily understandable and to maximise patients' cooperation to their care.
  • Responsible for coordination of transport arrangement for patients and their escorts.
  • Act as cultural consultant and cultural resource for RMCLHN staff to ensure culturally appropriate service isdelivered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
  • Advocate for use of appropriate language interpreter when need, and monitors Aboriginality status isacknowledged and recorded appropriately for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.


The Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network, called RMCLHN for short, supports more than 70,000 people living in country South Australia in the towns and surrounds of Renmark, Paringa, Berri, Barmera, Waikerie, Loxton, Pinnaroo, Lameroo, Karoonda, Mannum, Murray Bridge, Tailem Bend, Meningie, Tintinara and Coonalpyn.

This is a part time vacancy, working 37.5 hours per fortnight and salary will be adjusted according to actual hours worked.

This role is based at Meningie however the incumbent may be required to travel to other RMC locations.
