  • Become a volunteer to help us preserve our collection and help us tell the rich stories of Royal Far West in the lead up to our Centenary._


Royal Far West will celebrate 100 years of service in December 2024, and we are looking for a Volunteer Archivist to help us prepare for this significant milestone.

Over the past 100 years we have accumulated an extraordinary archive of photographs, historical items, media clips, annual reports, and documents, which tells our story, development, and impact on the lives of country children.


  • Job Description
    The Role:


As the Volunteer Archivist you will contribute to the assessment, documentation and preparation of materials related to RFW's history, with the aim of creating a written history of RFW and preserving our archive for future generations.


This is an exciting time for RFW, as we embark on the next phase of the redevelopment of the site on the beachfront at Manly.

As a Volunteer Archivist at Royal Far West, you will be helping us by:

  • Coordinating the administration, documentation, repackaging records, cataloguing, processing, storage, movement, and transport of objects, and creating and maintaining records.
  • Conducting indepth research, with both first
- and second-hand sources.

  • Advising and assisting with ensuring the safety and maintenance of archives and objects in storage.
  • Working with the Communications and Marketing team in gathering material in preparation for the centenary celebrations.
  • Desired Skills and ExperienceAs a Volunteer Archivist, you don't need a specific qualification to undertake this role. However, the role would suit someone with an interest in RFW history and a keen interest in archiving.

You will have the following skills and experience:
- some existing experience in archival practices or in some other allied experience, such as tertiary education that is aligned to this position eg librarianship.

  • Basic computer skills


This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys first-hand research, is experienced with recording and documenting accounts, and is interested in creating and preserving a lasting record for RFW.

The selection process may involve an informal interview.

You will need to provide a reference, have a NSW Working with Children Check which is for voluntary workers (this is free of charge) and be vaccinated against Covid 19.
