Sydney, New South Wales, Australia NSW Government -Legislative Council Full time

Are you an experienced policy professional wanting to manage a diverse range of parliamentary inquiries, on issues such as homelessness amongst older people, teacher shortages and puppy farming?

Are you an experienced writer, who could use your skills to draft effective committee reports that reflect the evidence of stakeholders and views of parliamentarians?

  • We're looking for passionate, driven and agile professionals who will thrive working in a unique political environment to manage parliamentary inquiries
  • We have at least 3 temporary positions available up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension, and further short term opportunities
  • We offer an inclusive and flexible working culture, including hybrid working, part time arrangements and job sharing.

About us
The Legislative Council is the Upper House of the NSW Parliament.

The Department of the Legislative Council supports the activities of the Upper House, including its sittings, committee inquiries, protocol and corporate responsibilities.

It also undertakes communication and engagement activities to inform and educate the community, as well as key internal and external stakeholders.

The two principal areas of the Department are the Procedure Office and the Committee Office.

Following a restructure, a third temporary office - Bicentenary and Corporate Office (Black Rod) - has been created for a two-year period.

The Department is accountable to the President of the Legislative Council, who is elected by the members of the Upper House.

Department staff also work in collaboration with the Department of the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Parliamentary Services to ensure the effective running of the Parliament.

Department staff strive to provide exceptional services to our key stakeholders, including the President, members and their staff, government agencies, stakeholders in committee inquiries, members of the public, and visitors to Parliament.

About the position

We are seeking at least three highly motivated, efficient and experienced professionals to join our vibrant and dynamic committee office as Principal Council Officers (Clerk 9/10).

As inquiry managers, Principal Council Officers are responsible for a committee inquiry.

This typically involves working with a small team to organise committee meetings, review submissions, arrange hearings and site visits, research and write reports, and provide advice to members of parliament.

We are a hardworking and high performing organisation committed to improvement and excellence.

We value those who hold a passion for the democratic process and an interest in understanding how it works in New South Wales, along with a desire to work in an environment where impartiality is key.
