Curtin University invites applications for the role of Technical Operations Coordinator, a key position designed to drive the operational excellence of Mechanical Engineering's technical facilities, supporting School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME). This role offers the unique opportunity to lead a team dedicated to supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in the areas of Materials Testing, Measurement, Thermodynamics and Vibration Measurement.

This is a Monday to Friday position - no weekends. We can offer you an agile and flexible working environment with great work life balance, and the opportunity to grow, develop and diversify your own skill set.

As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered.

Your new role
As a Technical Operations Coordinator supporting Mechanical Engineering, you will coordinate the day-to-day operational requirements of the laboratory and workshop spaces, ensuring effective space allocation for classes and/or research projects.

You'll provide leadership to the team, fostering and encouraging a positive work environment through the provision of mentoring, training, development, and performance management.

You'll work with and support the Technical Operations Manager (TOM) and Head of School (HOS) with resource and staff planning to ensure adequate skills coverage to meet the area's operational objectives.

You will play an important role in ensuring that occupational health and safety regulations and specific statutory requirements related to the area's activities are followed. Developing, implementing, and maintaining standard operating procedures for all aspects of the laboratory and workshop operations.
No two days are the same, this is an active and engaging role where you will be able to put your strong problem-solving skills to the test.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate daily operations in workshops, laboratories and research facilities, optimising space and resources for classes and projects.
  • Lead and mentor a team, enhancing their skills and fostering a collaborative, positive work environment.
  • Uphold and enforce strict safety standards and occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Manage maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures and oversee safety and purpose in the design of new equipment or systems.
  • Engage with key stakeholders including faculty members, students, and external suppliers.
  • Contribute to the planning, design, modification or refurbishment of technical facilities and equipment.
  • Oversee the design and development of equipment or systems or experiment apparatus in regard to safety and purpose.
  • Grant access, coordinate inductions and liaise with Security to allow students into restricted areas.
Who You Are:
  • You hold a relevant degree in Mechanical Engineering or have significant experience and expertise in a Mechanical Trade, technical or laboratory management.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with experience managing technical staff and facilities.
  • Strong organisational skills with a knack for timely and efficient task completion.
  • Expert in handling laboratory equipment and safety protocols with a commitment to occupational health and safety.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
