The Centre currently analyses over 110,000 samples per annum using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology and 22,000 samples by Sanger sequencing.

It utilises numerous library preparation procedures and operates several sequencing platforms.

The Research Officer is responsible for quality check of samples, preparing NGS (long
- and short-read) libraries, and for implementing new or modified procedures or processes in the Centre. The position is also required to work independently to trouble-shoot assays, specifically for long-read sequencing. The Research Officer requires a solid understanding of molecular biology and NGS techniques, and a high degree of technical as well as project management skills.

About the role

$96K - $103K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading

  • Fixed Term 12 months
  • Fulltime (35 hours per week)
The position of Research Officer reports to a Senior Research Officer and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Undertake quality control checks on submitted samples, independently evaluate results, prepare reports for clients and provide technical support for any enquires relating to the results.
  • Independently prepare samples for longread sequencing and operate the instruments.
  • Evaluate the results of sample preparation procedures and initiate the progression of samples to sequencing as required to provide operational continuity.
  • Inform clients on the progress of their project throughout sample quality control and sample preparation procedures.
  • Test and troubleshoot library preparation protocols on a variety of sample types.
  • Prepare quotes for clients, using set guidelines.
  • Prepare samples for shortread sequencing, as required.
  • Log and monitor critical stock levels ensuring resources are available for timely project completion.
  • Document laboratory procedures and write laboratory protocols for standard procedures.
  • Responsible for following the relevant quality procedures and processes in accordance with ISO/IEC 1702
  • Conduct internal audits in accordance with ISO/IEC 1702
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
  • Perform other appropriate duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director or Deputy Director/COO.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policy and procedures of the University and take all reasonable care to ensure your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself and others.

About the successful applicant

(Selection Criteria)
To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant experience gained through a combination of education, training and experience in molecular biology, genomics or related discipline.
  • Substantial demonstrated technical knowledge and handson experience in longread sequencing and/or other similar molecular biology techniques is required.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability, specifically in a molecular laboratory setting.
  • The ability to manage time effectively to deliver results for concurrent workflows.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Prior work experience in an accredited or regulated laboratory is desirable.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
