The role


In conjunction with delivering its Vision strategy, David Jones is currently in the middle of a multi-faceted and organisational wide transformation as it transitions to new ownership.

The Head of WHS & Wellbeing will be crucial in establishing a holistically safe environment for the David Jones community while driving strategy that aligns to our Thriving cultural aspirations.


Reporting to the GM People, you will be responsible for leading our strategy around safety, while ensuring implementation and maintenance of all safety policies and procedures across our retail, fulfilment centre and corporate teams.

With an eye towards safety compliance and continuous improvement you will influence and inspire key leaders across the business to ensure a culture of safety.


With a hybrid mix of time at home, in our Melbourne based office and our distribution centres, this role will suit an experienced safety leader who thrives in collaborative environments and wants to shape how things evolve for an iconic Australian luxury retailer.


What are core components of the role?

  • Lead, coach and inspire a team of diverse safety, injury management and wellbeing specialists
  • As part of the wider business strategy, develop a WHS strategy that creates holistically safe environments across the David Jones community
  • Bring a data, analytics and insights approach to how the WHS team operates
  • As part of the senior leadership team, identify ways or working that deliver safe commercial outcomes
  • Take accountability for the delivery of all agreed safety and wellbeing metrics/objectives
  • Champion a holistic and multifaceted approach to wellbeing across David Jones

Who are we looking for?

  • Dedicated experience leading WHS functions in retail and/or multilocation environments
  • Proven experience coaching teams who take accountability for the safety culture
  • Exposure to partnering with varying business functions including facilities management, construction/design and supply chain/fulfilment
  • A data and insights mindset that is relevant to changing conditions of the workplace
  • Proven appreciation of national legislation linked to safety and selfinsurance requirements
  • A collaborator who is outcomes focused and comfortable leading in transformative environments
  • Appropriate graduate or higher education qualifications in safety will be highly regarded
