Narbethong State Special School is a small, unique school which provides specialist teaching for students with vision impairment. We are located in Woolloongabba, Brisbane.

Individualised Curriculum Planning:

With support from the HODC, develop and implement comprehensive, student-centred ICPs for each student, in consultation with other professionals, families, and caregivers.


Curriculum Development:

With support from the HODC, design and adapt appropriate instructional materials and techniques that align with each student's abilities and learning styles, taking into account their deafblindness and any additional disabilities.


Instruction and Classroom Management:

Deliver engaging and interactive lessons, employing specialised strategies, tactile communication, augmentative and alternative communication methods, and adaptive technology to ensure effective communication and understanding in the classroom.

Understand and incorporate specialised pedagogy into the learning environment to address sensory processing challenges, enhance communication, and improve students' engagement.


Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate students' academic, communicative, and functional skills. Use data-driven insights to monitor progress, identify areas for improvement, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.

Communication and Collaboration:

Maintain open and effective communication with parents/guardians, support staff, and other professionals involved in the students' care and education.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure a cohesive approach to supporting the students' development.

Professional Development:

Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance expertise in working with students who have deafblindness and additional disabilities, staying abreast of the latest research, methodologies, and best practices.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Deaf Education, or a related field.
Additional certifications in the area of visual impairment, deafblindness, or any related disability are highly desirable.
Experience working with students who have multiple disabilities and willingness to teach students with deafblindness.
Knowledge of tactile communication, augmentative and alternative communication methods, and assistive technology or willingness to gain these skills.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with parents, colleagues, and multidisciplinary teams.
Strong organisational skills to manage class and individualised education plans and progress monitoring effectively.
Working with students who have deafblindness and additional disabilities can be both challenging and rewarding.
