Job location

Position based at Melbourne Assessment Prison

Forensicare provides specialist forensic mental health services across 12 of Victoria's 14 prisons, with expansion underway to include Western Plains in the Barwon region. Based at Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) in Spencer Street, West Melbourne, VIC, MAP provides 175 mental health intake receptions per week, 24/7 crisis intervention, a very busy primary and specialist mental health outpatient service, and a 16-bed custodial acute assessment unit. We also provide initial assessment and treatment to seriously mentally ill prisoners and an after-hours mental health crisis intervention service.

About the Role:

The Registered Mental Health Nurse (RPN3) practises within a custodial setting and is required to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and maintain a high standard of patient care, recognising the needs of the individual within the boundaries set by the profession and the environment.

Duties:

  • Work within an ethically and legally sound framework.
  • Demonstration of highly developed skills in the comprehensive assessment and treatment of patients in a custodial setting.
  • Demonstrate initiative in delivering nursing care and can practise autonomously.
  • Crisis intervention assessment should be provided to prisoners throughout the facility as appropriate.
  • Formulation and documentation of patient-centred care plans.
  • Completion of initial and ongoing risk assessment of patients and liaison with the interdisciplinary team to provide a safe environment.
  • Administration of medication to patients and monitoring of the effect on patients.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • Maintenance of comprehensive patient-focused documentation.
  • Maintenance of security practices within the unit.
  • Adherence to the professional code of conduct and code of ethics.

About You:

  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
  • Hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent and possess current registration with AHPRA.
  • An awareness of the organisational structure policies and procedures.
  • A thorough knowledge of current psychiatric nursing practices.
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake comprehensive health assessments of patients independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate nursing interventions, counselling and therapeutic programs.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • An ability to practise in a complex and diverse environment.
  • An ability to participate in ongoing staff education at the unit or program management level.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent.
  • Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA).
