Position Summary:

Commencing 5th February 2024


The Mercy Hospital for Women is a major public hospital and specialist referral centre with the medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health expertise to provide complex care for obstetric, neonatal and gynaecological needs.

The hospital care for public and private patients across maternity, neonatology and paediatrics, perioperative, gynaecology and women's health services.

Mercy Hospital for Women is a leader in research and teaching, particularly in relation to women's and newborn's health. The hospital has one of only four neonatal intensive care units in Melbourne and a special care nursery.

Mercy Hospital for Women cares for some of Victoria's most unwell babies and provides support for families throughout health journeys.

At Mercy Health, the Obstetric Medicine service provides an inpatient consultative service and regular outpatient clinics.


Northern Health is major metropolitan hospital with all major medical and most surgical specialties as well as busy emergency and intensive care departments.

It has a busy obstetric service with more than 4000 deliveries per year and is supported by a special care nursery and paediatric service.

At Northern Health, Obstetric Medicine provides an inpatient, outpatient and consultative service working closely with Obstetrics.

The Obstetric Medicine unit is comprised of specialists with SOMANZ accreditation and also endocrinology, nephrology, haematology and general medicine training with links to other services including sexual health and cardiology.

Trainees attend obstetric endocrinology, obstetric haematology and general obstetric medicine clinics, provide support to our Medical Obstetrics at Home service and conduct daily ward rounds supported by an intern.


Key Criteria:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognised in Victoria, Australia
  • Current medical registration with AHPRA
  • Completed both the RACP written and clinical basic physicians' exams
  • Ideally have already undertaken 12 or 24months of accredited RACP Advanced Training
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Have a strong desire to work within the field of Obstetric Medicine as a consultant on completion of advanced training


There are two 12months accredited training positions with the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) - with 6months at Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg and 6months at The Northern Hospital which will enable trainees to obtain certification in Obstetric Medicine at the completion of 12months of training.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview which will occur in July (where possible)
