Our Resource Development division provides support to and sustains our Pilbara iron ore operations through the delivery of orebody knowledge that ensures resources are developed in time, future value opportunities are identified and developed, and that tenure remains secure.

The Water Resource Evaluation team is responsible for providing the technical advice and direction necessary to mitigate water-related risks across our Pilbara operations at all stages of mine development, from concept through to feasibility, implementation, operations, and closure.


We are looking for a
Hydrogeologist to join our
Water Resource Evaluation (WRE) Department. You will be a central member to our
North-Pilbara Hydrogeology Team who's remit spans across 3 of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's (RTIO) major mine sites - Gudai-Darri, Yandicoogina, and Robe Valley.

The Water Resource Evaluation team is responsible for providing the technical advice and direction necessary to mitigate water-related risks across our Pilbara operations at all stages of mine development, from concept through to feasibility, implementation, operations, and closure.


Reporting to the Senior Hydrogeologist, you will:

  • Monitor and review effectiveness of dewatering and water management strategies in meeting mine plan and study requirements;
  • Develop and test hydrogeological conceptualisations in greenfields and brownfields settings;
  • Riskassess the impact of changes to mine plans on groundwater management strategies;
  • Compile, validate and quality assure internal and regulatory groundwater reporting;
  • Generate scoping investigations and scopes of work that design and define dewatering, depressurisation, water supply, and water monitoring requirements.
  • Provide technical and safety oversight of hydrogeological field programmes; and
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders including our contract drilling partners.

What you'll bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A minimum bachelor's degree in a relevant Hydrogeology or Geosciences field;
  • Be highly attuned to issues of hydrogeological data capture, quality control and information workflow;
  • Previous experience in Consulting and/or Operational Mining environments will be considered favourably;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a dynamic team environment;
  • Commitment to health and safety, and promoting a positive team behaviour / supportive culture;
  • Unrestricted 'C' Class Driver's Licence.
