About You

Do you want to help create impact through research translation at Australia's largest university? RMIT's Research and Innovation (R&I) Portfolio is looking for a dynamic, experienced and insightful commercialisation professional to join its Intellectual Property (IP) and Commercialisation team


Working within the IP and Commercialisation unit, you will be part of a broader team focused on accelerating translation of RMIT research outcomes to enable our commercial, industrial and civic partners to create impact.

The Manager, IP & Commercialisation is responsible for driving actions and processes necessary to adequately protect and translate the University's research outcomes/IP using various commercial/translation models.

This includes identifying, assessing and developing strategies to secure IP positions, establishing and managing the closure of licensing opportunities and providing advice and support to our research community on IP and commercialisation matters.


The Manager, IP & Commercialisation is responsible for building and maintaining strong networks internally across RMIT's research and innovation ecosystems and externally with industry partners, venture/investment groups and other stakeholders.

The position works closely with our Research Partnerships and Major Research Initiatives functions, as well as other key stakeholders in the R&I Portfolio to support and translate major research outcomes.

To be successful in this position, you'll have as a minimum:

  • High level understanding and extensive experience in research, technology innovation, translation, intellectual property and commercialisation.
  • Proven track record in IP protection, management and negotiating commercial and legal arrangements for commercialisation/translation of research outcomes.
  • Proven ability and networks to support market analysis of commercialisation opportunities.
  • High level interpersonal communication and influencing skills, including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment in a complex organisation.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple assignments, and efficiently manage multiple requests for information and assistance and to work under pressure of various deadlines.
  • Highly developed analytical, conceptual and problemsolving skills including the ability to develop innovative strategies that lead to improved outcomes in the delivery of research translation.
  • Proven experience of leading, development and implementation projects requiring extensive collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated history of behaviour aligned to the RMIT values, leadership capabilities and professional capability framework.
