The perfect opportunity for a self-motivated individual passionate about aquaculture to join Huon's Meadowbank and New Norfolk Hatcheries.

The role

The Hatchery Technician plays an important part in supporting Hatchery operations and maintaining the welfare of our fish to a high standard. As part of small hands-on team, you will:

  • Undertake routine checks and advise the manager on site of any adjustments required to maintain high standards of fish welfare.
  • Perform routine water quality system monitoring and coordinate water samples.
  • Flush water systems and clean tanks.
  • Feed fish and conduct weight checks and fish sampling to monitor and screen fish performance.

This opportunity is a full-time position operating 5 days a week. You may be required to participate in overnight shifts, and to provide support between the Meadowbank and New Norfolk Hatcheries.

About you

  • You ideally have a combination of practical fish husbandry experience and a qualification in Aquaculture or related field, or a basic understanding of fish biology and water chemistry.
  • You are enthusiastic and self-motivated with a positive attitude, willing to work in all environments and conditions.
  • You are an excellent communicator with the ability to work effectively autonomously and within a small team.
  • You can undertake the physically demanding requirements of this role in a safe manner.
  • You have a keen eye for detail and a proactive focus on continually looking to improve processes.
