About this roleThe

State Forensic Mental Health Services (SFMHS)


provides mental health services for individuals with mental illness associated with high-risk behaviours and who are typically in the criminal justice system.

Our services are delivered across a variety of settings including 45 inpatient beds, community, prisons, and courts.

There has been substantial recent State Government investment in forensic mental health services, including the establishment of two new Child and Adolescent teams (one community based and one in Youth Detention).

Funding has been announced for 48 adult and 5 child and adolescent forensic mental health beds, with further announcements expected.

Additional services are also planned in relation to the Criminal Law Mental Impairment (CLMI) reform.
As a member of the Mental Health, Public Health, Dental Services (MHPHDS) Executive team, the

Medical Co-Director (State Forensics)

works collectively to achieve patient, community, and population outcomes. The Co-Directors work in partnership to provide effective leadership, governance, strategic planning, and operational management of the clinical stream.

In this role, you will ensure the provision of safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care consistent with North Metropolitan Health Service's (NMHS) safety, quality, and performance frameworks.

Consultant Psychiatrist


positions within the State Forensic Mental Health Service are responsible for the psychiatric and medical assessment and treatment of consumers under their direct care.

In this role, you will provide clinical leadership, coordination and direction to a multi-disciplinary team responsible for delivering evidence based best practice treatment and evaluates the provision of patient centred-care coordination, within recovery orientated model.
