About the team:


The Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) is leading the responsible management and safe storage and disposal of Australia's radioactive waste.

A key element of ARWA's program is the delivery of disposal pathways for Australia's radioactive waste which will provide purpose-built, highly engineered solutions to manage radioactive waste from sources such as nuclear medicine production.

Nuclear Literacy
Radioactive waste exists in many locations around the country, including hospitals, research facilities and universities.

While these locations maintain safety measures, they were not specifically designed for long-term waste management, making their continued use unsustainable.

The construction and operation of dedicated waste disposal facilities is needed to safeguard the future of Australia's nuclear medicine industry and nuclear research capabilities.

ARWA's culture of safety and security is international best practice and is complemented by our work to increase nuclear literacy in Australia through education and awareness.


  • Experience in assisting in the provision of strategic, analytical and research insights to facilitate the development and implementation of key strategic plans.
  • Sound critical thinking skills, with the ability to understand the wider strategic implications of decisions.
  • Welldeveloped written and verbal communication skills, in particular the demonstrated ability to provide sound advice and prepare written reports and briefings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of workplace culture that embraces safety and security and is collaborative and inclusive.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills that foster trust and cooperation, and a proven ability to work effectively and with integrity within a politically sensitive environment.
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment, remaining flexible, agile and adaptable supporting colleagues at short notice.
  • A valid Australian drivers licence.
  • Knowledge of Australia's political landscape.
  • Sound understanding of Commonwealth Government processes.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business Management, Law, Communications or a similar field and/or equivalent experience.

What you will do:

  • Contribute to Agencylevel strategic planning, oversight, and internal policy development.
  • Plan, coordinate, evaluate and report on assigned projects and activities to provide advice on the progress and expectations.
  • Undertake research activities to develop evidencebased responses and recommendations that underpin development, implementation, and evaluation of program activities.
  • Conduct high level strategic planning including the ability to priories workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Engage with and provide advice to key stakeholders on relevant strategic planning matters and initiatives.
  • Facilitate stakeholder consultation to identify Agency strengths, weaknesses, and risks, and recommend and plan for opportunities for growth.
  • Promote ARWA's vision and strategic direction through key strategic relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain appropriate working relationships with other agencies to ensure appropriate integration of wider Government objectives and expectations.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or going to be granted Australian Citizenship before commencement. You may be asked to provide evidence of this.
  • Undertake a preemployment security assessment and subsequent security clearance. All staff are required to have a minimum baseline security clearance however some roles will require a higher level security clearance.
