Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Helia Full time

Helia, as Australia's first Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) provider, with over 50 years expertise in the Australian housing market are in the process of re-inventing ourselves.

We exist to accelerate financial wellbeing through home ownership, now and for the future. Our mission is to create innovative and tailored solutions in partnership with our customers. We aim to do this efficiently and conveniently, leveraging state of the art technology and data solutions.

Overview of the Strategic Development Function

The Strategic Development Function plays a critical defining and implementing Helia's strategic aspirations.

This newly created team has combined the following functions to enable a more disciplined focus on key strategic priorities across the business:

  • Group Strategy, Business Planning & Strategic Reviews
  • Strategic transformation with a particular focus on growing the LMI market
  • Custodian of Helia's strategic agenda and oversight of the integrated workplan
  • New Product Development
  • Corporate Development / Inorganic Growth
  • Management of existing investments in adjacenct businesses (e.g. Household Capital, Tiimley)
  • Management of relevant non lending partners to explore new growth opportunities
  • Communications & PR (Internal and External)
  • Government Relations – with a particular focus on increasing the awareness of LMI to better inform housing policy

Strategy Manager

The Strategy Manager is an integral part of the Strategic Development team, assisting the Head of Strategy & Growth with development, refinement and delivery of the Helia Strategic Plan in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Key to this role is ensuring focus on critical strategic priorities and initiatives across the full business, ensuring successful implementation and achievement of Helia's strategic ambitions.

This role requires a combination of analytical skills, strategic thinking, understanding of market trends, and business principles. A background in consulting will be highly beneficial. Strong presentation (ppt) and visualisation skills are essential.

The successful candidate will be comfortable with ambiguity, and interpreting feedback/responding to requirements of multiple senior stakeholders. While a strong understanding of LMI is beneficial, it is not critical to the role.

Responsibilities

  • Help to drive development of the Helia multi-year strategic plan with key stakeholders, ensuring an "outside in" and integrated approach
  • Support the annual strategic planning process including coordinating SLT Strategy days (2 p.a.) and Board Strategy days (3 p.a.)
  • Develop the strategy artefacts and communication tools to ensure alignment to the strategy across all stakeholder groups (staff, customers, investors, etc) and support their roll out
  • Critically assess the potential impact of various strategic initiatives, including determining viability, desirability and feasibility to enable prioritisation
  • Application of strategic frameworks and scans to the Helia environment
  • Lead adhoc strategic reviews with relevant business owners (e.g. broker strategy)
  • Develop regular reporting on the external environment (geo-political, economic, regulatory, customer, technology) to articulate the implications for Helia (i.e. risks and emerging opportunities)
  • Draft documentation to support workshops and Board meetings as relevant
  • Adhere to the compliance obligations relevant to the position; perform duties in an ethical, lawful and safe manner; undertake training as directed by the Compliance Leader; report and escalate compliance concerns, issues and failures; and disclose potential conflicts of interest

Innovation, Agility and Helia Values

  • The role sits within a unique, 'growth orientated' function of the business – working closely with stakeholders across the business and challenging the status quo to drive meaningful change across the business
  • Expected to role model the desired innovative, creative and agile culture and to demonstrate optimism and a growth mindset
  • The role is required to drive clarity of and alignment to the Helia strategy and is encouraged to experiment with different approaches, frameworks and formats
  • The role will often require creative problem solving to move from a 'blank sheet of paper' and a handful of conceptual ideas to more concrete concepts and actionable strategies and initiatives
  • To be successful the candidate will need to work collaboratively and cross functionally and leverage the technical expertise of others

Capabilities - Required

The most important requirement is an ability to understand, contribute to and document the key drivers of business performance and corporate strategy. You should also be open to ambiguity and able to manage multiple tasks effectively, as well as demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Commercial acumen and market awareness/intelligence
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
  • A natural disposition towards action - making an impact by doing rather than talking
  • Demonstrated systems thinker – ability to join dots and see the bigger picture
  • Strong presentation/ppt skills
  • Understanding of strategic frameworks and their application
  • Understanding of financial performance metrics and levers
  • Team player who works collaboratively with others to shape the future direction of the organisation
  • Understanding of Board processes
  • Attention to detail and results orientated
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and challenge
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Proactive approach and willingness to contribute ideas and opinions
  • A keen interest in business strategy and desire to grow within the field
  • Business Degree

Capabilities - Preferred

  • Previous consulting experience (highly preferred)
  • Experience in financial services sector
  • Working knowledge of the Australian mortgage insurance and financial services industries
