The Opportunities

Economic Division
Economic Division offers fascinating work on issues that matter to the Australian people. Our responsibilities are wide ranging from advising the Prime Minister and government on macro
- and microeconomic policy; housing and competition; taxation, super and workplace relations; fiscal policy and budget processes; and impact analysis. Across these issues, we collaborate with other Commonwealth agencies to analyse and advise on policy and programs, as well as chaperoning Budget and Cabinet processes and the legislative and Parliamentary activities of our line agencies.


The Division consists of four Branches - we are seeking talented and motivated Assistant Secretaries to lead the Office of Impact Analysis and the Economic Policy Branch.


Office of Impact Analysis
The Office of Impact Analysis (OIA) is a central part of policymaking in Australia.

Officials from OIA work across government on significant policy proposals coming to decision makers, to ensure they are accompanied by robust and high quality analysis of the potential impacts on Australia.

OIA drives good policy development and supports agencies to analyse broader economic, social and distributional impacts of new policy proposals or program changes.

OIA works to support the Prime Minister, Cabinet and other decision-makers by ensuring new policies and programs demonstrate a clear evidence base.


The Assistant Secretary will have very wide vision across the APS of all policy proposals coming forward - in excess of 3,000 policy proposals each year.

You will determine when to trigger OIA's involvement, targeting those measures with the largest impact on the country, and work to improve policy design and reduce unintended consequences.

You will soundly test your negotiation skills and represent Australia internationally given OIA's reputation for leading one of the most effective Impact Analysis systems in the world.


The OIA balances two complementary roles - as coach (supporting agencies to do quality analysis) and assessor (grading the policy work of others) - and are deeply involved in all major policy proposals coming forward.


Economic Policy Branch


The Economic Policy Branch (EPB) advises the Prime Minister on: macroeconomic conditions and outlook, international trade, the economic implications of international security and microeconomic reform.

The Branch works closely with other Divisions of PM&C, The Treasury, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide this advice.

Economic Division is seeking a talented and motivated Assistant Secretary to lead the EPB.

The Assistant Secretary requires strong economic credentials and experience in providing economic analysis and commentary to Government while engaging with leading economists across the private and public sector.


Office for Women, Women's Economic Policy Branch


The Office for Women (OFW) works to advance the Government's core commitment to achieve gender equality and improve the lives of women in Australia in a tangible way.

OFW is dedicated to providing quality gender advice and delivering effective policies and programs for the Minister for Women and the Prime Minister.

OFW connects purposefully and with credibility across Government, with experts, civil society and business, to ensure that policy is driven by evidence and draws from the lived experience of women.


The Division consists of three Branches - we are seeking an influential and proactive Assistant Secretary to lead the Women's Economic Policy Branch.

The Assistant Secretary Women's Economic Policy key responsibilities include:

  • Being part of the OFW senior executive team leading a high performing, inclusive and innovative team, where staff feel valued, supported and have a strong sense of purpose;
  • Building strong relationships within and outside of government to influence decisions with credibility, and through early engagement and collaboration;
  • Performing an impactful policy support role before and during Budget processes to assist colleagues across Government to achieve outcomes to improve women's economic equality;
  • Working with the Workplace Gender Equality Agency to implement the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 Review;
  • Building Australian Public Service capability, data and system maturity for gender responsive budgeting; and
  • Delivering on Governm
