CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a significant effort in metal AM R&D, working with computational and experimental materials scientists as the machine learning (ML) lead, designing diagnostic-prognostic control algorithms and training ML models of a directed energy deposition (DED) AM process.
Your duties will include:
- Conducting an extensive literature review at the start of your tenure and identifying appropriate methods, pipelines, and critical research gaps.
- Assisting with data collection during experimental trials and helping characterise the suitability and quality of the AM outputs as inputs to the ML models.
- Developing ML models and associated closedloop control algorithms for diagnosing and controlling defect formation in a DED process in near realtime.
- Collaborating with AM and ML experts to finetune strategies and validate results.
- Disseminating findings at seminars, conferences and in publications in upperquartile peerreviewed international venues.

To be considered you will need:
- A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, preferably Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence or Robotics. Qualifications in Applied Mathematics, Manufacturing, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or similar, may also be considered.
Please note:
To be_ _eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience_.
_- Evidence of strong python programming skills and understanding of data structures relevant to ML, including software available on a repository.
- Excellent understanding of the various types of statistics, data mining and manipulation, and machine learning algorithms.
- Demonstrated handson experience in the training of ML models including Convolutional Neural Networks and Reinforcement Learning. Experience in partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) will be highly regarded.
- Experience working as part of a high performing research team, capable of receiving, and objectively assessing, the opinions and inputs of expert collaborators for the continuous improvement of postdoc contributions.
