St George Hospital is a large metropolitan hospital, located 14 km from the Sydney CBD near the beaches of Botany Bay.

The paediatric department comprises a 16-bed general inpatient unit and a 12-bed level 4b special care nursery with the capacity to provide long term non-invasive ventilation and short term invasive ventilation for babies down to 32 weeks gestation and 1.8kg birth-weight.

Paediatric staff also support a 12-bed specialised paediatric emergency unit.

St George Hospital is the high risk obstetric unit for the Central Hospitals Network and the birthing service manages 2700 to 2800 deliveries per year.

There are 6 staff specialist paediatricians (3.5FTE) as well as an academic staff specialist (0.5FTE) within the department who hold accreditation with the RACP as supervisors for basic and advanced paediatric training.

The paediatric department refers to the Sydney Children's Hospital Network for tertiary cases unsuitable for management locally.

Main Purpose of Position
General Paediatric Experience 1.0 FTE


This position provides a unique stable training opportunity for an advanced Trainee in Paediatrics to remain in one to department for a 12month period.

There will be an opportunity to obtain experience in a supervised role that incorporates acute and ambulatory patient care, neonatal special care, the provision of education and clinical research involvement.

This position is accredited for RACP advanced training but not basic training. Applicants with suitable experience who do not need to have training accredited are welcome to apply.

This position is suitable as a job share position.

Responsibilities:


The position provides an environment suitable for significant general Paediatric experience managing sick children in a very active metropolitan hospital.

This is a single 12 moth position but will work on a roster with two emergency trainees and two paediatric trainees on 3 to 6 month placements.

Shifts are 10hours with 12 hour weekends shifts covering Days, Evening and Nights with responsibilities to the ward, Special Care Nursery Birthing Unit, post natal Ward and supporting care in the Emergency department.

Planned new acute care and ambulatory clinic will provide opportunity to develop outpatient management skills and meet the college requirement for new outpatient assessment.


The St George Hospital paediatric team is cohesive and collaborative and provides mentorship and supervision with frequent training and educational opportunities.

Clinical teaching of Phase 2 and 3 medical students from UNSW and junior medical staff. Participations in weekly teaching and learning opportunities including journal club, grand grounds and scenario based training.

Skill development:


This role is perfect for senior trainees to provide a bridge to independent practice by developing skills needed for acute care and outpatient management.


  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Career path to demonstrate advanced Paediatric clinical skills development and decision making and commitment to general Paediatric advanced training.
  • Previous experience working with children or newborns
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in neonatal and Paediatric resuscitation
  • Demonstrated ability to make carefully considered clinical decisions, with ability to work to a higher level of clinical responsibility.
  • A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to work shift work, participate in afterhours overtime, oncall rosters.
