  • Applications are sought for the 2024 clinical year from 5 February 2024 to 3 February 2025 with possible extension.
  • Canberra Hospital is its principal location. It is a modern 600 bed hospital and the major tertiary teaching hospital for the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding NSW region serving a population of 0.5 million. The annual caseload is over 19,000.
  • The Canberra Hospital's Anaesthesia Department and Pain Management has positions for 18.5 Registrars and 4 Senior Registrars/Postgraduate Fellows. The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at Canberra Hospital provides a comprehensive range of clinical anaesthesia services for most surgical specialties including cardiothoracic-, neuro
- and paediatric surgery along with an active preadmission clinic, a post-anaesthesia care unit and an acute and chronic pain management service. Canberra Hospital also play a major role in the Capital Region Retrieval Service with the Snowy Mountains Hydro Southcare helicopter.
  • The hospital has 13 operating theatres (including a dedicated MRI neuroanaesthesia suite) and a 14bed intensive care unit with an additional 10 high care beds. In addition, the Department of Anaesthesia meets a number of outofareas requirements for anaesthesia or sedation, such as gastroenterology, angiography and brachytherapy.
  • Professor Thomas Bruessel holds the inaugural Chair of Anaesthesia at the Australian National University (ANU). The Department and.
  • Calvary Public Hospital is accredited for 6 Registrars. It is a modern healthcare service complex comprising a 174bed public district general hospital.
  • Both hospitals are teaching hospitals of the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School and have strong research links to the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the ANU as well as to the University of Canberra.
  • Albury Base Hospital and Wagga Wagga Base Hospital are the other hospitals participating in the Canberra Region Rotation Registrar Training Program. Both hospitals provide acute and community health care services.

Duties:

Under limited direction of the unit director you will perform you will:
Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of the Health Directorate under the supervision and direction of the Consultant Medical Practitioner;
Contribute to clinical audit and research and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care;
Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff;

Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice.

Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in medicine and eligibility for membership with ANZCA;
Have completed all requirements for the completion of Advanced Training, or be able to show these will be satisfied prior to commencement date of this position
