Role Description/Criteria


At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School, we are seeking an experienced, suitably qualified Literacy Leader who is committed to Catholic Education, has a strong understanding of the Victorian Curriculum and is committed to working as part of a team.

This is a 2 year role with the possibility of reappointment after 2025.


The Literacy leader will be a highly skilled classroom practitioner who is able to engage with others as part of a high performing learning environment of ongoing improvement, self reflection, coaching/mentoring and peer interaction.

This role will involve the leader being a visible presence within learning areas in order to build the capacity of teachers to provide, implement and embed effective strategies and processes to maximise student learning.

The Literacy Leader is responsible for creating a positive learning environment that promotes growth for all students.

This will be achieved by demonstrating an ability to work as a collaborative team member (leadership, staff, parents and students) within our school and broader community.

The Literacy Leader will need to support staff in the development and implementation of evidence based practice and differentiation that supports the learning needs of all students.


The role of the Literacy Leader includes:

  • having a sound understanding of evidence-based interventions programs that have a strong synthetic phonics focus and a willingness to continue to implement and promote Literacy throughout the school and the broader community
- having a shared vision for Literacy in line with the OLMC Annual Action Plan
- promoting Literacy throughout the whole school community
- providing support for teachers in the planning, programming, and implementation of the English curriculum
- leading the collection, collation, analysis and interpretation of data to inform teaching
- having knowledge of current best practice in Literacy and and Evidence Based Learning approach
- planning and facilitating planning and learning team meetings that focus on the professional development of staff
- preparing and distributing a clear agenda for all meetings that outline expectations and school priorities in line with the school's Annual Action Plan
- enlisting and preparing Parent Helper Sessions to support the work in classrooms
- tracking the progress of students and supporting planning for differentiation across the school
- collaborating with the Learning Diversity Leader in the development of SAP goals with staff that meet the needs of NCCD students
- collaborating with the school speech pathologist
- monitoring the documentation of Literacy programs to maintain consistency and accurate records
- working in collaboration with the Learning and Teaching Leader to ensure a shared vision and understanding of integration across all curriculum areas
- understanding of how to effectively conduct Tier 2 assessments, including SPAT-R, YARC reading assessments, Dyslexia Screener, and Auditory Processing Screeners
- supporting teachers in the knowledge and understanding of the progression of learning through the Victorian Curriculum
- modelling instruction
- organising and promoting events such as Book Week, Scholastic Book Club, etc.
- being an active member of the school leadership team
