The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The Team
The OPC Manager will form part of the leadership team in the Gold Coast Area Office. This Office will oversee the delivery of the upcoming referendum across the Divisions of Fadden, Forde, Moncrieff, and McPherson.

This position will be based in the Gold Coast Out-Posted Centre in Arundel.

Out-Posted Centres are busy and complex environments during the delivery of an electoral event, with up to 300 staff working across multiple Divisions on concurrent activities.


The Opportunity


The OPC Manager is part of a pilot program to explore the impact of having a leadership position embedded in an Out-Posted Centre during an electoral event.


This is a leadership position with responsibility for staff management and welfare; prioritisation of work effort; and providing visibility of work effort and progress to the Queensland Executive team.

The OPC Manager is not expected to be technical expert, and the technical lead for electoral events rest with the Divisional Returning Officers.


This is a 10-week opportunity which runs from approximately 5 weeks before polling day to 5 weeks after polling day.

We are looking for an agile, energetic, self-motivated, and results-driven leader who can work well under pressure.

To excel you'll have:

  • Current or very recent experience in the Commonwealth Public Service
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and manage staff.
  • Strong Leadership and Management skills in a fast paced and intense environment
  • Ability to remain positive and respond to pressure in a calm manner, while committing energy and drive to see that goals are achieved.
  • Confidence and ability to effectively communicate, collaborate and negotiate with team members, business areas and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
  • A demonstrated ability to work autonomously and a strong commitment to working harmoniously within a team to achieve positive results and support the AEC's strategic direction.

  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.

  • Applicants may be required to undertake psychometric testing as part of this recruitment process.
