The Catholic Diocese of Townsville was established in 1930 and it covers an area extending from Townsville, to the Whitsunday and Burdekin regions , to Ingham and Halifax, Winton and encompassing Mount Isa and several small, isolated western towns.

The Catholic Diocese of Townsville is seeking suitably qualified and experienced applications for the position of Director Financial Services to commence on a full-time permanent basis working 37.5 hours per week, located at our Townsville office.

The Director of Financial Services oversees the financial management of the Diocese in accordance with the requirements of Canon Law and the instructions of the Bishop. In collaboration with the Bishop and the Diocesan Finance Council (DFC), this role facilitates the implementation of the Bishop's financial policies and strategic plans within the Diocese, whilst ensuring financial stability of the Diocese and mitigating risks to the organisation.

The Director Financial Services is also directly responsible for the Diocesan Development Fund (DDF).

As a member of the Catholic Diocese of Townsville Senior Executive Leadership Team (SLT), this position is further responsible for leading through exemplary leadership, the strategic direction, change and culture directives/initiatives as identified by the Bishop. Duties include but are not limited to;

  • Ensuring the highest ethical financial management, stewardship, and administration of the Diocese, for the ongoing financial viability, stability, and mitigation of risk.
  • Undertaking the development of annual budgets for each Agency in accordance with the direction of the Bishop, and for acceptance by the DFC.
  • Ensuring appropriate accountability systems and practices prevail within the Diocese for the management of its financial affairs.
  • Ensuring the preparation of annual financial statements, and progressive reports for each Agency in accordance with Diocesan policies and guidelines.
  • Responsible for the leadership of staff within the financial administration office, ensuring delivery of duties, performance development, succession, probation, leave, and personnel practices are undertaken.
  • Ensuring the smooth operation, consistency, standard(s), interests, and communication consistency for governance and committee positions.
  • Acting as Manager of the Diocesan Development Fund (DDF).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Acquainted with Canon Law and be able to apply corporate world financial skills in an ecclesiastical institution.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing strategic leadership, oversight and advice, and risk management regarding the management of Financial Services.
  • Senior executive experience coupled with high level leadership skills, and capacity to demonstrably lead in complex environments, preferably in a medium to large size organisation.
  • Formal Accounting qualifications (CPA or CA), with postgraduate or additional studies in a related business and/or legal field.
  • Significant experience and knowledge of Diocesan financial administration and/or corporate finance, best practice, and performance management principles.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing financially aligned strategic and operational budgets and plans.
  • Strong understanding of risk management principles.
  • Demonstrated strong business and commercial acumen with proven experience in team leadership.
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices with experience in reporting to a Board or similar.
  • Good computer literacy with a broad range of systems, with a demonstrated ability to undertake reporting, interpret data and trend analysis.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of the Code of Canon Law especially in relation to the administration of temporal goods and the role of Bishops and Pastors.
  • Ability to develop effective networks and working relationships within the Diocese, Boards/Committees, internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level interpersonal, negotiation, facilitation and communication skills with a collaborative working style and approach.
  • Ability to make hard decisions and/or contribute to such processes.
  • High degree of analytical skills, problem solving, planning and organisation expertise.
  • Ability to integrate and interpret data from multiple sources, identifying potential trends versus ad hoc anomalies.
  • High level motivation and innovation with an ability to inspire others.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, balance priorities and demands from several sources.
  • Hold the ability to work with and support the Mission and Vision of the Townsville Diocese and live in accordance with the Catholic Social Teachings.

The successful applicant will need the ability to hold a paid Working With Children Check, Drivers License, National Criminal History Check and will undergo compulsory financial checks.
