The role

The Consumer Protection Division is responsible for promoting fair trading and consumer protection in Western Australia. The Investigation and Regulation Directorate is responsible for directing an investigative program to effectively detect, deter and remedy improper practices in relation to legislation administered by Consumer Protection.

Consisting of eight individuals, your team conducts a range of investigations related to legislation administered by Consumer Protection and also operates WA ScamNet. As a Principal Investigator, you will manage the operations of your team including human, financial and physical resources to deliver quality investigative outcomes. Additionally, you will undertake high priority, high profile, and complex investigations to identify and pursue breaches of any legislative and regulatory requirements. Alongside this, you will play an active part in contributing to the strategic and operational planning of the branch by assisting the branch manager and manager investigations.

Your experiences in leading a high performing team and conducting complex investigations (including preparing successful complex briefs of evidence), will be key to your success as a Principal Investigator.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments) at the time of application.

This position is located in Perth, at 140 William Street.

  • Demonstrated highly effective skills in leading and managing a large team of investigators. Well-developed understanding of legal concepts as they apply to investigations and the ability to develop the skills and knowledge of investigative staff to deliver high quality, innovative investigative and compliance outcomes.
  • Considerable demonstrated knowledge and experience in conducting complex, sensitive and high-profile investigations relating to relevant legislation using recognised investigative methods, skills and standards.
  • Proven ability to provide appropriate and accurate advice to consumers, industry, members of the public, staff and other stakeholders about legislation and investigative requirements.
