About the branchThe Litigation & Dispute Resolution Branch comprises several legal teams that provide specialist legal services to government departments and statutory bodies on matters which are topical and often involve public interest issues.
The day-to-day work of the team includes managing diverse, complex and sensitive litigation including:State care, personal injury and negligence claims (including institutional abuse claims involving minors and young persons who were formerly in the care of the State)
General civil, police civil and tortious claims
Applications under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried Act 1997 (Vic)
Coronial investigations including inquests
Supervision order matters
Contempt of court, defamation, injunctions, vexatious litigant applications, commercial litigation, judicial review and statutory interpretation matters
Subpoenas to government departments
About the role
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated lawyer seeking to pursue or continue their career in public law, by joining the VGSO as a Senior Solicitor in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Branch.
The core focus of this role will be to provide legal services to one of our key clients, Corrections Victoria.
The successful candidate will be required to efficiently manage complex and sensitive litigation and provide operational advice in relation to the Serious Offenders Act 2018.
The successful candidate will also provide support to other streams of work undertaken by the branch, which could also include personal injury litigation (negligence and breach of statutory duty), historical institutional abuse claims involving former minors and young persons in the care of the State, contempt of court, vexatious litigant claims, matters under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997 , judicial review, asset confiscation, coronial inquests, public liability and subpoenas.
Skills and experienceCriminal law experience would be advantageous and will be highly regarded.
The ability to manage and conduct complex and sensitive proceedings in state courts and tribunals, including a sound knowledge of relevant court practice and procedures;
Proven ability to provide oral and written advice on complex and sensitive matters and carry out complex legal research and analysis.
Good interpersonal communication skills to truly connect with team-members and work together to deliver exceptional results for our clients.Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, on a number of complex files simultaneously, take responsibility for timeframes and deadlines, and proactively forecast next steps.
Prior litigation experience on behalf of government is highly regarded for all roles.Admission as a solicitor in Victoria and eligibility to hold a practicing certificate in Victoria is essential.
