A bit about the role


As a Principal Planner Aboriginal Cultural Heritage within Wyndham Council's newly created Heritage Unit, you will lead Council's Aboriginal Cultural Heritage planning and policy development, promoting a coordinated approach to the recognition and management of living Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and ensuring its integration into Council's policies and the Wyndham Planning Scheme.


You will actively engage and maintain positive working relationships with Traditional Owners and facilitate Council liaison with and between Registered Aboriginal Parties and other Traditional Owner organisations, Wyndham's First Peoples communities, property developers, external contractors, and government agencies including First Peoples—State Relations.


What you'll do

  • Administer planning responsibilities relevant to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and ensure Council meets its obligations pursuant to the Wyndham Planning Scheme, the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, the Planning and Environment Act 1987, and other relevant policy and legislation
  • Facilitate partnerships with key stakeholders including Traditional Owner organisations, government and nongovernment agencies, internal stakeholders, and developers, and negotiate positive outcomes for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage planning and management in Wyndham
  • Provide strategic advice and represent Council on Aboriginal Cultural Heritage planning and management issues including presentations and the provision of advice at Committees, Council, Panels, public and other meetings
  • Provide knowledge sharing and training to build the capacity of Council to engage effectively with Traditional Owner organisations and stakeholders and support positive outcomes for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage
  • Act as a key advisor in regard to daytoday issues relating to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage

What you'll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in cultural heritage management, archaeology, urban planning, Indigenous studies or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with Aboriginal people, communities and Traditional Owner organisations
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising effectively, working collaboratively, and negotiating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management issues at a local and state level
  • An understanding of urban planning and land development processes in a growth area setting (desirable)
  • Demonstrated experience in policy and strategy development and experience in managing complex projects
  • A continuous improvement mindset with a positive, proactive, and flexible attitude
