Rail Associate of Cost – Major Infrastructure Projects

About Our Client:

Our client is a dynamic, multidisciplinary client-side advisory firm that specializes in major infrastructure and property projects throughout Australia.

One of the fastest growing infrastructure advisory firm in the country, they have an impressive and expanding track record in providing world-class cost & program advisory services to large clients on major projects within the transport infrastructure sector, as well as in major power and utility arenas nationally.

Unlike other players in the market, they choose to operate lean, giving their employees significant exposure and responsibilities to aid their development and career progression.

The business is well-established with a strong pipeline of work for the foreseeable future, yet remains nimble enough to avoid the bureaucracy often found in larger organizations.

Their culture is vibrant, dynamic, and ambitious. They attract employees who are driven and eager to progress quickly in their careers.

Role Overview:

As a Rail Associate or Associate of Cost, you will take on a crucial leadership role within the estimating team, driving the successful delivery of major rail infrastructure projects across Queensland and beyond. Your role will involve both technical and managerial responsibilities, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of cost estimates while leading and developing a team of dedicated Rail Estimators.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Lead a team of 5-7 Rail Estimators, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members, enhancing their skills and capabilities.
  • Allocate resources efficiently based on project urgency and team capacity.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and identify opportunities for professional development.

Project Estimation and Delivery:

  • Oversee the preparation of accurate first principles cost estimates for major rail projects, including civil, track, rail systems, and station components.
  • Review and validate estimates to ensure they align with project requirements and client expectations.
  • Utilize Expert Estimation and MS Excel to manage and present cost data effectively.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, methodologies, and best practices in rail infrastructure cost estimating.

Client Management and Business Development:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, managing relationships and ensuring their needs are met with the highest level of service.
  • Engage in high-level report writing, presenting cost analysis and risk assessments to clients and stakeholders.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for organic business development through exceptional service delivery and strategic networking.

Risk Analysis and Mitigation:

  • Conduct comprehensive risk analyses for projects, identifying potential cost overruns and other financial risks.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure project budgets remain on track.
  • Communicate risk assessments and mitigation plans to clients and internal stakeholders.

High-Level Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare detailed cost reports, including cost breakdowns, variances, and forecasts, for internal and external use.
  • Ensure all documentation is accurate, thorough, and complies with industry standards and client requirements.
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior management and clients in a clear and concise manner.

About the Projects:

  • You will be working on a diverse portfolio of major rail infrastructure projects across Queensland, with project values ranging from $100M to multi-billion-dollar ventures. These projects primarily serve government clients, including the Transport for Main Roads (TMR), and encompass a wide range of rail infrastructure components. Currently, our client is engaged in nearly $10B worth of rail projects nationally, providing a robust and dynamic environment for your expertise.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Background: Senior Estimator, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Cost Manager, Associate, or Associate Director with substantial experience in major transport projects (road or rail).
  • Experience: Proven track record in delivering precise cost estimates and managing estimating teams. Experience from contractor, consultancy, or client-side backgrounds is highly valued.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, client management, analytical, and report writing skills. Proficiency in Expert Estimation and MS Excel is essential.
  • Attributes: Ambitious, driven, and eager to progress quickly in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Career Path:

This role offers a clear pathway to a Director or formal Estimating Manager role within 18-24 months, providing significant career advancement opportunities in one of Australia's fastest-growing infrastructure advisory firms.
