The Opportunity:


As the soil database manager/developer you will work within the CSIRO soil information team to support ongoing development and implementation of data environments within an evolving data modelling domain, connecting and collaborating with research, industry and governments to ensure soil data is accessible and interoperable for future benefits to the Nation.


Working under the direction of the Principal Scientist you will be responsible for managing the CSIRO Soil Information System (CSIS) databases.

Activities will support the soil data ecosystem including data ingestion, developing data validation tools, new schemas and reporting mechanisms, in the context of a responsive, operational environment.

Initial focus will be on the Australian National Soil Information System [ANSIS] Project, Research Projects, the Australian National Soil Archive (ANSA) and other data systems within CSIRO.


Your duties will include:

  • Manage the database components of the CSIRO Soil Information System (CSIS) including schema maintenance, database performance, integrity, security, backup, migration, monitoring, scheduled reporting and developing and documenting management and access policies.
  • Design, develop, assess and document new schemas to improve data handling, quality control and support new types of soil data, utilising an understanding of Innovative and interoperable approaches to data management and delivery, including O&M and feature based approaches, data fabrics, RDF and triple stores, and knowledge graphs.
  • Manage and enable the ingestion of new soil data; from curation and prioritisation through to testing, upload of prepared soil data and registration of data management plans; while also promoting the use of soil data standards through training, documentation and support to data wranglers as required.
  • Develop tools and database processes and queries to support an evolving data lifecycle (ingestion through to delivery via APIs), in conjunction with software engineers relating to CSIS components such as the Australian National Soil Archive, the CSIRO National Soil database (Natsoil) and field data collection.
  • Ongoing exploration of new methods to improve data interoperability and accessibility, improve data quality and develop recommendations to support planning and delivery of a wellresourced system.

Salary:
AU$105,80- AU$ 114,500 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A Bachelor degree or higher in Information Technology or similar field, or equivalent demonstrated work experience.
  • Demonstrated minimum 2 years' experience in database management and development.
  • Experience with a range of data and information modelling and management approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with specialist IT teams to collaborate and integrate system functions.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience and/or knowledge of trends, developments, and best practices in DBMS and related technology, including cloud based and serverless approaches to data storage and management.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Visual Studio, ASP.NET, Web API, Github, Open API and Swagger.
  • Experience with soil databases and knowledge of Australian soils and landscapes and/or willingness to learn.
  • Willingness to participate in database development, research and supporting roles for international projects, including travel to and shortterm work in regional countries.
