About the role:


Reporting to the Director Satellite - Governance & Industry Engagement, this role will establish and lead a centralised Satellite Project Management Office (PMO).

Leveraging the Optus Enterprise PMO platform (ServiceNow), the Satellite PMO will be a central hub for tracking/reporting, assurance/quality control, information management, risk/issue tracking, change control, and knowledge management support for all Optus Satellite programs and projects.


The role plays a pivotal internal role in supporting the Satellite Leadership Team to establish and operate strong Program governance discipline.

It also a customer-facing role, which demands the blending of operational and technical requirement management with customer management skills of the highest order.

Of critical importance for the role is the management and delivery of large Strategic Programs (>$250M+), which require delivery of the following objectives:

  • Oversight of all Optus Satellite Space Programs
  • Optus 11 and MEP
  • Defence projects such as TD7 and TD6; multiple Mobile Blackspot Programs and other key initiative programs such as Alternate Voice Services Trial, and Payload on Optus 12 (such as the Trailblazer programs).
  • Management of governance of full suite of Mobile, Fixed & Satellite and Transformation projects.
  • Translate strategic plans into project deliverables for tangible business outcomes.
  • Program management of delivery teams using established program delivery methodologies.
  • Responsibility to the business owner and sponsor for the delivery of program outputs in time, within budget and as per specifications.
  • Management of vendors and third parties.
  • Financial management (Operational and Capital) and reporting, including generation of regular Forecasts.
  • Program Reporting for key partners and Steering Committees.
  • Lead of procurement activities (such as MSA, SOW, WOC, RFP, Tenders & purchasing).
  • Management of a hybrid matrix org structure team, including direct and indirect reports. The role will lead a team comprising Business Analysts, PMO Analysts, Program Managers, Project Coordinators and Project officers.
  • Management of internal and external technical teams in the establishment of systems for Optus Satellite projects, programs, and systems (including for external customer such as Defence).

About you:

  • Tertiary Education
  • Master's Degree or equivalent in Communications/IT engineering
  • Qualification/Certification in Project Management or a related field
  • Demonstrable strong commercial acumen and integrity.
  • Excellent administrative skills, coupled with a general understanding of the program life cycle, Project documentation, Project standards, tools, and methodologies
  • Strong relationships with senior management in key third parties
  • Expert knowledge project management methodologies and PMO management
  • Experience in developing relationships with third parties that drive measurable results.
  • Experience in managing monthly delivery to multiple deadlines
  • 20+ years of experience in the telco industry
  • Minimum 12+ years' experience in Project Management and running high budget Programs
  • Customer Facing and Customer Service Skills
  • Time Management & Prioritisation Skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Consultative skills
  • Exceptional experience with Governance, Processes, Methodology, Risk Management and Reporting in a project environment
  • Understanding of change management and communication
  • Proven people leadership skills.
