About the roleThe Queensland and Northern Territory Audits of Surgical Mortality (QASM & NTASM) review all deaths associated with surgical care.

The review process identifies areas of clinical management which can be improved.

QASM and NTASM are funded by Queensland Health and NT Health and are programs of RACS in collaboration with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG), and the Anaesthetists (NT only).


The role involves being Chair of the QASM Committee and supporting the NTASM Chair as a member of the NTASM Committee.

Both Committees meets 2 times a year and oversee the projects, to support the running and success of the audit programs.

A key aspect of the role is to lead QASM and NTASM in the upcoming redevelopment of the national program (ANZASM).

ANZASM is a collaborative arrangement between RACS and fully funded by the jurisdictions to guide developments in line with the Australian Safety and Quality Commission framework for clinical quality registries (CQRs).

The current Clinical Director, Dr John North FRACS is retiring from this role.

You will support QASM and NTASM, providing project oversight, and considerable input and direction for the redevelopment of processes and outputs.

The Clinical Director also actively supports the engagement of health services/hospitals and surgeons to participate and fully comply with the programs.

A close liaison with Queensland Health and NT Health, and other relevant stakeholder groups is also a key part of this role.

A demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, with excellent organisational and time management skills are required, as are superior verbal, and written communication skills.

The role requires working in a team of administration and researcher staff.

The ability to review data analytics and statistical processes for the interpretation and communication of meaningful outcomes is also required.

The currently position requires approximately 10.5 hour each week. Remuneration will be at the appropriate senior specialist level.

  • Demonstrated experience in CQRs with a clear understanding of the Australian Safety and Quality Commission framework and its reporting requirements
  • Demonstrated experience in quality improvement and/or evaluation including working within a Qualified Privilege program or a clear understanding of the constraints of Qualified Privilege
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising and negotiating with a wide range of professional stakeholders, including government jurisdictions at all levels, both internally and externally to the organisation
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements of clinical audits and registries
  • Experience in a medical administration roleQualifications
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons
  • Current medical registration, without conditions, undertakings and reprimands

SkillsDemonstrated ability in the following areas:

  • Development of quality improvement systems relating to health services
  • Ability to review data analytics and statistical processes for the interpretation and communication of meaningful outcomes
  • Previous exposure to regulatory requirements of clinical audits and registries
  • Ability to undertake a review of processes
  • Substantial ability to analyse and streamline processes through a quality improvement approach
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
