About the branch:


The
Legal Metrology Branch (LMB) plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services.

To ensure traders comply with the law and adopt correct measurement trading practices, we employ inspectors who check that measuring instruments (for example, weighing scales, fuel pumps and weighbridges) are accurate throughout Australia, pre-packaged articles contain the correct amount of produce, and that fuel sold in service stations complies with fuel quality standards.

We also support the outcomes of other government agencies, undertaking inspection and audit activities through memoranda of understanding.

About the section:


The
Trade Measurement Services Section **(TMS) within the LMB has oversight and is accountable for the operational delivery of various risk based national compliance program plan activities which are developed by the branch using Inspectors.

This work requires delivery of quality inspection and audit activities at a wide range of business premises to support the annual compliance plan objectives.


As an outcome of these activities, inspectors communicate with traders checking for compliance with the _National Measurement Act 1960 Cth _.

Where non-compliance is detected, inspectors may initiate various forms of regulatory responses, ranging from issuance of non-compliance notices, through to preparation of briefs of evidence for more serious offences.

What you will do:

The successful applicants will develop skills and knowledge (through on the job and classroom-based learning) relevant to trade measurement inspections, compliance and enforcement duties and responsibilities in a range of trading environments, by:

  • conducting tests and audits of measuring instruments
- conducting quality audits and assessments
- monitoring trading practices
- assessing pre-packaged products for compliance
- providing information and education to licensees, businesses, and consumers
- conducting regulatory activities on behalf of other Commonwealth government entities, as required.

The successful applicants will also develop skills and knowledge in investigation techniques by:

  • identifying and investigating apparent breaches of trade measurement legislation (including conducting formal interviews when required)
- compiling formal reports which may be considered for court-based action
- providing administrative and technical support as required.


Successful applicants will also be required to complete work health and safety training, and to perform hazardous tasks at some worksites, such as testing fuel pumps at service stations and weighbridges at quarries.
