The role will be situated in IP Australia's Centre of Data Excellence (CODE), and reports to the Chief Data Officer. CODE is responsible for data engineering, managing a data lake with associated tools built on AWS services ('the IP Data Platform') the production model for IP Australia, enterprise reporting, data requests, ad hoc analytics, data release and data governance. CODE is implementing a new Data, Information and Analytics Strategy, a whole of agency approach to our data. There are four strategic areas of focus in the Strategy: Enhancing Culture, Effective Governance, Empowering Insight and Embracing Information and these will guide our work over the next three years.

There are four Director positions within CODE. The first leads the teams responsible for the IP Australia production model, enterprise reporting, the data front door, ad hoc analytics, data science and open data. The second leads the BAU support teams for the AWS data lake (the IP Data Platform), including DevOps, data engineering, and business fact/data views development. The third is our Patent Analytics Hub that analyses technology trends in global patent data and provides insight to government and researchers.

This role will take responsibility for leading the information and data governance responsibilities for the organisation, participating and supporting a number of whole of government activities as they relate to data and information, support our record keeping functions and build data literacy capability with IP Australia and supporting our business data stewards.

Position duties

As a CODE Director, you will:

Lead a team to provide a single point for internal and external data and information governance advice and strategic direction. Lead a team to develop, deliver, and improve the data governance capabilities in conjunction with stakeholders, and to expand the interactive access to data for all stakeholders. Collaborate within government and IP Australia to make the best use of IP Australia's data holdings to make our data into a recognised national asset, largely through participating in whole of government working groups, developing and implementing a data governance framework, developing and supporting relevant data and information governance policies. Provide data governance assurance to IP Australia's Senior Leadership Team to enable strategic, transparent, data-driven business management, and proactively conduct strategic analysis and write briefs/minutes to guide Executive decision-making for improved organisational performance. Lead the section to create an environment to achieve stated goals and objectives, take ownership and honour commitments. Provide technical direction and advice contributing to support information and data governance for IP Australia.
