Why this role matters

The Homelessness Melbourne Metro Community Engagement Program is based at our Residential Services in North and West Melbourne.

The Program provides a range of Community Engagement Programs and activities aimed at encouraging and supporting people experiencing homelessness build capacity and reach their full individual potential.

This is achieved through the provision of planned recreational and therapeutic activities, vocational support and client participation.

The program works across both Flagstaff and The Open-Door residential services, which provide short term accommodation and support to single men aged over 18 years experiencing primary homelessness.

Community Engagement is part of a trans-disciplinary team that works closely with:

  • Residential Community Support Services
  • Case Management Services
  • Health Services including Bolton Clarke
  • Catering Services
About the role


We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and pro-active individual to take the next step as a Team Leader providing direction for the Community Engagement team based at our Residential Services in North and West Melbourne.

Responsibilities include

  • Ensures Trauma informed, strengths based, client centred practice principles underpin practice
  • Promote a culture where all Community Engagement staff, foster and focus opportunities for innovative and flexible responses to identified resident need, developing services that are client focused and which contribute to building and strengthening local communities
  • A range of supports, designed to strengthen capacity for meaningful engagement and social cooperation within the residential communities are provided & maintained through a multidisciplinary team approach including community support staff, JSAT worker, therapeutic recreation and peer support specialist (once role established)
  • Services are accessible and culturally inclusive to diverse client and community needs, including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders, LGBTQIA+ and CALD
  • Fosters a culture of a Rights Based Approach for client dignity and excellence in service delivery
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders including the local community, External Community Networks & other Salvation Army programs
  • Develop an annual Program Action plan for the service that is consistent with the Victorian Homelessness Strategic Plan and vision
  • Establishing resident pathways to external Community Engagement programs including volunteer & vocational opportunities
  • Oversee the review and development of Community Engagement program documentation
  • Participate in Homelessness Melbourne Metro Residential Service Team meetings and planning workshops
This is a permanent full time position. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award Level 6.

You will have

  • An appreciation of and the ability and willingness to promote and support the values and ethos of The Salvation Army
  • Advanced Written and Oral Communication Skills
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Critical thinking / Problem solving often within short timeframes
  • Use of deescalation / crisis communication skills to reduce high conflict situations
  • Advanced organisational and administrative skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people experiencing homelessness.
  • Ability and understanding of supporting staff exposed to distressing traumatic situations
  • Relevant experience in the social service sector
  • Relevant experience in the supervision of staff
  • Degree Qualification in Community Development, Social Work or a related discipline
  • A current VIC Drivers Licence
  • Valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • Willingness to undergo a national criminal history and work eligibility check
