A little bit about us


The Data and Systems Branch leads the delivery of the department's Data Strategy and policy activities, Data Hub programs, geospatial capability, Cabinet Coordination and Government Wide Initiatives.

The Geospatial Services Team is responsible for providing geospatial capabilities to support evidence-based decision making for policy development and program delivery across the infrastructure, transport, regional development, communications and arts sectors.


We work closely with the department's policy and program areas (this is main source of our work), IT (to ensure the geospatial environment meets the department's needs), as well as a wide range of other government agencies (for data sharing and implementing APS wide geospatial initiatives).


The opportunity we have available


The Geospatial Services Team undertakes geospatial analysis and creates maps, dashboards and other visualisations to help policy development and program delivery across the department.


There are two Assistant Director (EL1) positions available:

Geospatial Technical Lead:
Look after a small team and be responsible for leading geospatial analysis and visualisation projects. Work with the Geospatial Infrastructure Team within IT to help administer and maintain the department's ArcGIS Enterprise environment.

Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for how we undertake our geospatial work and deploy products to the department's ArcGIS Enterprise environment.-
Geospatial Developer:Maintain and support existing geospatial systems, including design and implementation of spatial databases.

Responsible for automating data capture and transformation processes. Engage with internal stakeholders to help integrate geospatial data with other sources of data across the department.

Initiate and support the creation of geospatial products and tools through the development lifecycle process.
What will you do?- Undertake geospatial analysis and create maps, dashboards and other visualisations to help policy development and program delivery across the infrastructure, transport, regional development, communications and arts sectors.

The core geospatial tools used in the Geospatial Services Team are ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and FME. Contribute to a positive team environment, work cooperatively and collaboratively with team members, and develop productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure positive outcomes with a strong client-focus. Contribute to the regular production of geospatial data and visualisations, including developing and maintaining interactive or static mapping products.

These products could be used by our internal clients or on the department's public facing mapping portal. Engage with stakeholders across the department to ensure the collection, management and use of geospatial data aligns with the department's data strategy and management framework.
