Job no: 513708

Employment type:
Ongoing

Location:
Canberra

Categories:
Policy, APS Level 6, Executive Level 1

About the department:

The department plays a key role in the Australian Government's agenda to create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient and competitive economy.

Our work builds on Australia's existing strengths, supports businesses to grow, and drives new opportunities for long-term productivity growth and prosperity.

The success of the department helps Australia recover from the economic consequences of COVID‐19 and adapt to its ongoing effects.

Through our work, we support the government's economic recovery plan and help to deliver a better future for all Australians.

About the team:

Come and be a part of a smart, flexible, friendly and fun team managing the transition to net zero emissions in the gas sector.

We're based in Canberra's CBD, but have team members across Australia and a digital-first culture.

Australia's gas policy settings impact energy security, affordability, the environment, and local economies. This is true in Australia and in our export markets.

Australian gas is integrated into many modern supply chains as a source of energy and as a feedstock for manufacturing.

These supply chains connect us with our trade and investment partners, creating essential goods, services and jobs.

But the role of gas will change will change as the world decarbonises. How, and how fast, are highly uncertain - dependent on an unknowable range of future events.

In this context, we're developing a clear long-term strategy for Australian gas to support decarbonisation, future proof our region's energy security and maintain our international reputation as a trusted trade and investment partner.

The opportunity
Be part of the team positioning Australian gas to:

  • support decarbonisation of the Australian economy, including meeting our national climate targets of 43% reduction in emissions below 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero by 2050
- promote energy security and affordability, at home and abroad
- maintain the trade and investment relationships critical to Australia's economic prosperity
- help our trade partners on their own paths to net zero.

What's in it for you?

Take advantage of a rare opportunity to:

  • build you networks across and beyond the Australian Public Service through high-profile, cross-cutting and meaningful work
- excel in public policy development, and
- contribute to the national interest.

You'll gain first-hand experience of national-level policy processes in a complex and diverse stakeholder environment, honing skills engaging with:

  • foreign, state and territory governments
- gas market participants (producers, exporters, transporters, users, investors and retailers)
- peak industry bodies
- community and advocacy groups.
- academia
- journalism
- advocacy, lobbying and government relations
- trade and foreign investment
- foreign, state, territory and Commonwealth governments
- energy project investment and finance
- large physical infrastructure approvals processes
- national security, geopolitics and intelligence.

As an APS 6 employee, you will
- be able to undertake work under limited direction,
- take responsibility for managing work projects to deliver results
- take initiative and will exercise judgement to solve problems and produce high-quality advice for decision-makers,
- be able to draft policy documents and develop draft policy advice for presentation to the Minister or Executive,
- be able to communicate confidently and clearly, and
- build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

As an EL1 employee, you will
- be able to undertake work that is complex or sensitive and operate under broad direction
- manage and deliver competing projects and priorities
- draft and review policy documents and policy advice for presentation to the Minister or Executive
- exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role, which may include providing direction to others, contributing to team planning, and supervising or mentoring staff
- demonstrate sound decision-making and judgement
- communicate clearly and convey information in a way that is tailored to the audience, and
- build and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

What you will do:

You will work as part of a team to:

  • conduct broad-based consultation with a diverse range of stakeholders on the role of natural gas during and beyond the transition to a net zero emissions economy
- coordinate a national strategy across the APS and with the states and territories
- develop and communicate public policy
- navigate government processes (including Cabinet processes).
