Canberra, ACT, Australia Australian Defence Force Full time

Be a tradie in the Navy ensuring ships are kept in peak working order, by maintaining, diagnosing, and operating engineering systems and machinery.

The Marine Technician role is split into three trade specialisations and on application you will choose from either electrical, hull or propulsion. If you are unsure what trade specialisation is right for you, there will be opportunities to discuss these further with a military recruiter and change your specialisation during your application process.

Explore the specialisations below:

Marine Technician - Electrical:
Like an electrician, you will maintain the ship's electrical power, generation and distribution systems, including, alternators, batteries, charging systems, electrical switchboards, lighting systems, and corrosion protection systems. Once you finish your training you will receive a Certificate III in Electrical Fitting. Marine Technician - Hull:
Similar to a fabricator or boilermaker, you will be responsible for welding and fabrication of the ship's hull and structural fittings, and maintain the ship's auxiliary systems, like the freshwater generation plants, stabilisers, and air compressors. Once you finish your training you will receive a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication. Marine Technician - Propulsion: Just like a mechanic, you will operate engineering systems and conduct maintenance to ensure that engines, gas turbines, mechanical systems, propellers, gearboxes, and steering systems remain serviceable. Once you finish your training you will receive a Certificate III in Engineering – Fixed Mobile and Plant Mechanics.

Whether you already have a trade, you're an apprentice, or you have no experience at all, you'll be paid from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job trade training, with opportunities to obtain further qualifications, up to and including a Diploma. You may be able to use your existing qualifications and be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

As a sailor, you'll perform additional duties and learn more skills to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole ship. This may include ship security, firefighting, boarding party, flood repair, line handling, first aid, flight deck duties, replenishment at sea, medical emergency team member, ammunitioning or ceremonial duties.

You'll enjoy a competitive salary package, career stability, opportunities for continuous progression and an adventurous lifestyle, all while making a difference to Australia.
