About the role

We’re looking for someone with experience in investigations, compliance or enforcement to produce good outcomes within a legislative framework. You will be responsible for investigating animal-related complaints and making fair and balanced decisions to uphold community safety and liveability.

The role of an Animal Management Officer is to administer Council's legislative and policy responsibilities in relation to companion animals (cats and dogs), birds, poultry, and livestock through animal management practices. The incumbent is required to work independently under general direction and is guided by established policy, procedures, methods, guidelines and directions.

It's an exciting time to be joining the newly rebranded City Safety and Liveability Branch, as we embark on an $18 million redevelopment of our Queens Road facility which will shortly result in a new, state of the art Animal Management Centre, as well as a modern new workplace for over 90 skilled employees who deliver important services to enhance the safety, liveability and appeal of Logan city.

Key responsibilities of the role

Respond to reports of immediate risk to public health and safety in regard to domestic animal attacks and wandering livestock, using meticulous negotiation and observation skills to determine risk to public health and safety and act accordingly within legislation. Conduct inspections and investigations and produce effective outcomes within the parameters of relevant legislation, local laws, Council policies, plans and programs. Accurate entry, maintenance and storage of data in Council’s corporate systems including clear and factual record keeping contributing to legally enforceable compliance outcomes. Make application for and execute Warrants and Court Orders issued by a Magistrate’s Court in relation to proven non-compliance with relevant legislation Ability to listen and provide clear and consistent advice and direction to customers, demonstrating transparency, integrity and sound judgement with the ability to manage difficult, escalated or highly emotive situations.

Who you are

In a supportive team environment with great new technology and flexible working conditions, you will be able to autonomously manage your workload and make decisions. We’re looking for someone with these general capabilities and attributes:

A strong sense of responsibility, with excellent communication skills Adaptable to change and solution focused A team player who works hard to achieve excellent results Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to handle challenging situations with empathy and professionalism Ability to work independently and prioritise tasks in a fast-paced environment, while adhering to established guidelines and procedures. Well-developed knowledge and extensive practical experience consulting and advising on domestic animals (cats, dogs, poultry, aviary birds and all manner of livestock). Demonstrated ability to work with animals of all behaviour types in a confident and mature manner.

In exchange, you’ll find reward in helping to deliver on the actions of Council’s new Animal Management Plan 2023, which focuses on driving positive long-term pet ownership behaviour change in our community through education, awareness and enforcement to uphold city safety and liveability. Your ability to contribute to the goals, growth and wellbeing of the team will be critical to your success.
