About the role

The team is accountable for the provision of core information and support to the business, working within the Infrastructure Planning and Strategy business unit, under the Sustainable Infrastructure Group. Utilising their knowledge and skill set in relation to the hydraulic/hydrological modelling of sewerage and recycled water systems, the team provides optimal investigation and system planning services to enable growth and justify and influence business decisions and long-term outcomes.  

The suitable candidate will assess large development applications, develop strategic through to tactical plans for existing and future infrastructure, applying their understanding of sewerage and recycled water modelling, whilst contributing to the maintenance and development of new network models. The team provides technical and timely responses to queries including, but not limited to, customer growth, operational queries, capital delivery and network sewage age. The Engineer – Systems Planning Wastewater will collaborate with stakeholders, implementing continuous improvements by incorporating technical knowledge in wastewater network modelling, and planning, whilst abiding by standards and guidelines.  

About the Person

To be considered for this role the ideal candidate must be a Tertiary qualified, self-motivated, highly professional individual, with an ability to demonstrate technical engineering capability, and a specialised interest in hydraulic and hydrological modelling. It is expected that the preferred candidate can demonstrate the implementation of technical input into the application of strategic decision making, influence, and justification for the maintenance, upgrade and investments for recycled water and sewerage systems assets across the state.  

The Systems Planning Wastewater Engineer will present as technically orientated, a desire to work collaboratively within the Integrated Planning and Strategy unit, alongside other key business partners across the organisation.  

Prior experience and understanding in hydraulic and hydrological engineering are essential. Demonstrated applied knowledge and use of the sewer and water hydraulic modelling software, and a mix of the following including Geographical Information Systems (GIS), data analytics, systems planning and general water industry infrastructure design would be highly favourable.  

The successful individual will bring adept analytical skills to the team, and their role. Utilising excellent written and verbal communication strategies to work collaboratively within the team and greater network. 

Key requirements of the role include

  • Technically capable Engineer with an interest and understanding in hydraulic models, first principles, procedures, and practices. 
  • Develop and influence plans for future and existing infrastructure, supporting future asset projects and justification. 
  • Collaborative communication within the Integrated Planning and Strategy Team, managing internal and external enquiries. 
  • Providing technical advice and solutions on Wastewater and Recycled Water Systems across the State.
  • Adopt continuous improvement strategies, with safety strategies implemented across all aspects of operations. 
  • Effective communication strategies- incorporating written and verbal skills within all aspects of operations. 
  • Actively contribute to maintain and build new recycled water distribution and sewerage drainage hydraulic models.   
  • Develop infrastructure plans across all spatial scales, to support current and future new system models. 
  • Demonstrate a professional enthusiasm towards professional development and upskilling.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering or substantial system planning experience that demonstrates an equivalent competence (essential) 
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and hydrological engineering first principles, procedures, and practices (essential) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in detailed investigation, options, concepts, and detailed design of wastewater and recycled water systems (desirable) 
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills (essential)
