The Role
We are looking for a Data Engineer who will work as part of a small team to support Defence's work, health and safety analysis and reporting. The team manages the Safety Trends Analysis and Reporting Solution (STARS) system – a self-service reporting kiosk with over 700 reports and 1,000 users. The team will also be managing the Defence Interim Solution (DIS) which aims to achieve a whole-of-service approach to the improvement of health, wellbeing, and safety for current serving members. 

The DIS will provide the platform for data analytics and visualisation for existing data available in Defence. The team is additionally implementing the joint Defence/Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Data Sharing and Analytics Solution (DSAS). The DSAS intends to link Defence and DVA data to provide a whole-of-life view of current and former ADF members to improve health, wellbeing and safety outcomes. 

This exciting and challenging role will be responsible for designing, building, deploying, managing and maintaining Defence's work health and safety data infrastructure, including a data warehouse, cubes, analytic data stores, and business intelligence flow processing.

About our Team
The Unified Analytics Team sits within the Analysis and Reporting Directorate in Work Health and Safety Branch, Defence People Group. We maintain Defence's Work Health and Safety Management Information System (Sentinel) and provide timely and accurate work health and safety reporting and analysis to provide Senior Leaders and other stakeholders with insights to drive effective decision making regarding enterprise level work health and safety matters.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a data engineer with proven experience developing and maintaining data warehouse solutions, integrating multiple data sources from both current and legacy systems. 

We would expect our successful candidate to have 3+ years’ experience working in technical data roles:

Developing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes using Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Azure Data Factory, or a similar ETL tool. Data Modelling – experience working with fact and dimensional data warehouses. The ability to design data models based on technical and business needs. Writing ad hoc Structured Query Language (SQL) and the ability to interpret complex queries. Investigating, troubleshooting and permanently fixing production load issues. Demonstrated ability to communicate with stakeholders.
