About the role:

A unique and rewarding casual opportunity to join Box Hill Institute on site at Barwon Prison as our Mumgu-dhal tyama-tiyt Teacher. 

As the Mumgu-dhal tyama-tiyt Teacher you will be delivering quality education to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who are interested in exploring  personal connections and explore Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture and community as well as developing language, literacy and numeracy skills.

You will be contributing to design, facilitation and evaluation of teaching and learning programs. You will also develop assessment tools and support planning and evaluation in a range of custodial settings.

This role forms part of a highly rewarding project where Box Hill Institute, in partnership with Corrections Victoria, provide prisoners the opportunity to complete Nationally Recognised Training courses to achieve qualifications and improve their confidence, life skills and increase employability once released from prison.

Note: This role is a casual opportunity is located within a prison environment where teachers will be alone with student groups made up of prisoners. You will be employed by Box Hill Institute however working onsite at Barwon Prison.

About You:

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116)
  • Relevant experience working with Aboriginal people and communities
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Indigenous culture and history, with the ability to proactively contribute to building Indigenous cultural safety and respect for staff, students and visitors
  • Ability to build relationships with Indigenous prisoners/students to create positive educational pathways
  • Ability to develop student pathways through providing tailored experiences for students that includes individualised support and study plan options. Ability to work to an action plan and flexibly adapt when appropriate
  • Demonstrated experience in working to provide support to Indigenous students or community.
  • Ability to meet legal, professional and policy requirements involved in the delivery of education and support programs to students within a prison environment
